US Military Interventions In Iran, Venezuela Driven By Oil: Russian FM Lavrov

The CSR Journal Magazine

In recent comments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that the United States has clearly indicated that its military involvement in multiple countries, including Iran and Venezuela, is largely motivated by oil interests. Speaking during an interview with Public Television of Russia, Lavrov stated, “The United States has officially stated that no one can dictate to it. They only care about their own well-being.”

According to a report by Al Jazeera, Lavrov further alleged that the US is willing to go to extreme lengths, such as orchestrating coups or even committing killings, in order to secure its interests in nations endowed with crucial natural resources. His remarks pointed to an aggressive strategy purportedly employed by Washington in the pursuit of energy dominance.

In his discussion, Lavrov pointed specifically to Venezuela and Iran, accusing the United States of being overt about its intentions centred on oil. He noted, “Our American colleagues do not hide that it is oil,” emphasising that the US operates under what he describes as a “doctrine of dominance in the world’s energy markets.”

Erosion of International Law and Diplomatic Relations

Lavrov contended that such a doctrine represents a significant deterioration of international law, claiming that global decision-making is increasingly influenced by power rather than by established legal principles. He argued that the prevalent attitude is that “might is right,” as highlighted in the report by Al Jazeera.

These statements come on the heels of Lavrov’s earlier criticisms, during which he urged Washington to adopt a more diplomatic approach rather than relying on conflict. On April 16, he advised the US to engage in dialogue with governments that it might oppose, hinting at a misstep in American foreign policy.

According to Lavrov, the breakdown in relationships between nations often has roots in changes to American policies. He mentioned, “It was the US, however, that first made agreements and then walked away from them,” suggesting that this pattern could lead to further tensions in international relations.

Diplomatic Developments Involving US and Iran

Amidst the charged atmosphere, the Russian Security Council, via TASS on April 15, expressed concerns regarding the possibility of the US and Israel using peace negotiations as a strategic cover for a potential military strike against Iran. They indicated that Iran has sufficient military capability to retaliate if attacked.

As these geopolitical concerns evolve, there has been a notable shift in the US’s diplomatic posture. The United States confirmed plans for Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to travel to Pakistan for discussions with Iranian officials. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced this development on April 24, revealing that the initiative originated from Tehran’s request for dialogue.

While top aides continue to brief US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, the absence of both Vance and Iranian negotiating team leader Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf raises questions about this new round of discussions. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has scheduled a tour that includes Islamabad, Muscat, and Moscow, aiming to strengthen coordination with regional partners.

No official confirmation from Araghchi has been provided regarding a meeting with the American delegation, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the talks. Concurrently, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth remarked on the current stance of the Trump administration, stating that the US is not in a rush for a deal with Tehran, but rather allowing the Iranian government time to make a favourable agreement.
