US Clears USD 482 Million Support Package for India’s Apache Helicopters and M777 Howitzers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The United States has formally notified a proposed sale of sustainment support services and associated equipment for India’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, with the overall package valued at an estimated USD 482.2 million.

The notification was issued by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees the US Foreign Military Sales programme. The move follows the US Department of State informing Congress on May 18 about the proposed assistance package for the two weapon platforms operated by the Indian armed forces.

Support Package Covers Maintenance and Logistics

The proposed agreements are aimed at providing long-term maintenance, logistics, training and technical support for the Apache helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers.

According to the notification, India has requested sustainment support for the M777A2 artillery systems, including ancillary items, spare parts, repair and return services, training, technical assistance, field service representatives, depot capability and other programme-related logistics support.

The estimated cost of the M777A2 support package has been pegged at USD 230 million.

In a separate notification, the Department of Defense said India had requested AH-64E Apache sustainment support services along with engineering, technical and logistics assistance from both the US government and contractors.

The Apache package also includes technical data, publications, personnel training and other programme support services. Its estimated value stands at USD 198.2 million.

Key Contractors Identified for the Programme

Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin have been identified as the principal contractors for the Apache helicopter support package.

BAE Systems, based in Cumbria in the United Kingdom, will serve as the principal contractor for the M777A2 howitzer sustainment programme.

India inducted the M777A2 ultra-light howitzers through the US Foreign Military Sales route to enhance artillery capabilities, particularly in mountainous regions.

The Indian Army also operates AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for precision strike operations and battlefield support missions.

US Says Deal Supports Strategic Partnership

The Department of Defense said the proposed sales are consistent with US foreign policy and national security objectives and would contribute to strengthening the strategic relationship between Washington and New Delhi.

According to the department, the support package would enhance India’s ability to address present and future security challenges, strengthen homeland defence and deter regional threats.

It further stated that India would face no difficulty in integrating the services and equipment into its armed forces.

The Pentagon also said the proposed sales would not alter the basic military balance in the region and would have no adverse impact on US defence preparedness.

Overall, the package is intended to ensure continued operational readiness of India’s Apache helicopter fleet and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers through sustained maintenance, logistics support, technical assistance and training.
