UP Constable Suspended for Allegedly Accepting Free Food

The CSR Journal Magazine

A constable from the Kanpur Police has been suspended following allegations that he accepted complimentary food items from local vendors. This action was prompted by a formal complaint from local traders and the circulation of a video on social media, which purportedly captured the constable consuming ice cream while on duty.

The incident reportedly drew attention when members of a traders’ association filmed the constable, who was assigned to a Police Response Vehicle (PRV), consuming ice cream. The footage was disseminated across social media platforms, subsequently reaching senior police officials and raising concerns about the police conduct.

Traders claimed that the constable, along with other personnel from the PRV unit, frequently requested free ice cream from a nearby vendor and golgappas from a different street seller. In their complaint, they accused the police officers of misusing their authority by demanding such complimentary food items.

Inquiry Leading to Suspension

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anand Kumar Jha initiated an inquiry in response to the complaints received regarding the PRV vehicle, numbered 9303. This vehicle is part of the emergency response service 112 and was reported to be often stationed in the vicinity of local shops.

Upon conducting a preliminary investigation, authorities found the allegations to have some merit. The inquiry revealed prima facie evidence supporting the claims against the suspended constable. The ACP confirmed the suspension, stating that the allegations involved demands for free items from local vendors.

Following preliminary findings, ACP Jha indicated that a more comprehensive investigation has been entrusted to the ACP of Ghatampur. He mentioned that further actions, whether departmental or legal in nature, would depend on the outcomes of the full inquiry.

Future Actions and Accountability

The police department has emphasised its commitment to maintaining integrity and accountability among its personnel. This incident stands as a reminder of the importance of ethical conduct within law enforcement.

Lieutenant authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional measures based on recommendations from the inquiry report. The aim is to ensure transparency and uphold the trust between law enforcement and the community.

The case highlights ongoing debates about police behaviour and the expectations of public service. With the increasing scrutiny from the public and media, police organisations are under pressure to address misconduct swiftly to maintain public confidence.
