The CSR Journal Magazine

A two-storey building in Chandigarh’s Industrial Area Phase 2 collapsed on Saturday, prompting an urgent rescue operation to locate individuals trapped beneath the debris. As local authorities responded to the situation, multiple rescue teams were deployed to the site to conduct extensive searches in the wreckage.

According to information from police officials, four individuals have already been rescued from the collapsed structure. However, efforts are ongoing to retrieve two more individuals who are believed to be trapped. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (South) Gurjit Kaur confirmed via phone that the rescuers continue to work diligently at the scene.

Details of Those Affected and Ongoing Efforts

Chandigarh’s Mayor, Saurabh Joshi, provided further updates on the incident, estimating that between six to seven individuals were present in the building at the time of the collapse. He reported that, while three people were extricated by rescue teams, two others managed to exit the structure independently. Nonetheless, there remain two individuals trapped under the rubble, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is actively working to extricate them.

Mayor Joshi mentioned that both trapped individuals had been located and were reportedly conscious. Rescue teams are employing advanced techniques to secure their safe removal from the debris. Eyewitness accounts indicated that a section of the building, which served as a scrap godown, fell with a significant noise, heightening concerns amongst nearby residents.

The building was undergoing renovation at the time of the incident, and officials have commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. Numerous rescue operations are currently in progress, and local authorities are coordinating the efforts of various agencies involved.

Role of Emergency Services and Community Response

Local emergency services, including police and fire departments, rushed to the site immediately following the building’s collapse. The NDRF is working alongside these teams, equipped with the necessary resources to support the rescue efforts effectively. Heavy machinery has been deployed to facilitate the clearing of debris, allowing rescue personnel access to the trapped individuals.

With the area cordoned off for safety reasons, the community is closely monitoring the ongoing developments. Local residents expressed shock at the incident, predominantly due to the suddenness of the collapse and its impact on the neighbourhood. Community support is in place for those affected by the event, and further assistance will be evaluated as circumstances unfold.

As the situation progresses, additional details will be provided by the authorities. Emergency services remain on high alert to address any further needs that may arise as rescue operations continue. Many are hoping for the safe recovery of the individuals still trapped.
