The CSR Journal Magazine

Tripura is set to conduct its inaugural live tea auction at the proposed auction centre in Agartala in September, as confirmed by Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd (TTDCL). This event is positioned as a significant advancement for the state’s tea sector. Ghosh shared details during an interview on August 21, expressing optimism regarding the preparations underway.

The TTDCL is currently finalising the operational aspects of the auction centre, with considerable interest noted from buyers and tea industry representatives from regions such as West Bengal and Assam. Ghosh mentioned that a buyer-seller meeting held in Kolkata on July 31 attracted around fifty-three participants linked to the Kolkata tea auction, showcasing the potential of this new initiative.

Furthermore, a similar gathering took place in Guwahati on August 6, where producers and buyers exchanged insights about the auction framework. The interaction is crucial for ensuring a streamlined auction process, with officials from the Guwahati tea auction centre providing guidance for adopting their established practises in Agartala.

Operational Features and Logistics

The auction centre is intended to operate from a government-allotted facility located in Gurkhabasti, Agartala, previously associated with the Industries Department. Ghosh remarked that arrangements for the operation of the tea auction centre have been effectively completed, facilitating a smooth transition into functionality.

According to Ghosh, the Agartala auction centre will align with the pan-India auction system regulated by the Tea Board of India. This structured approach aims to attract buyers from across the country, marking a critical milestone for the local tea industry. Ghosh pointed out that the completion of this centre would enhance market accessibility for tea producers in Tripura.

He emphasised the state government’s commitment to advancing the tea sector, noting that tea has long been a cornerstone of Tripura’s economy yet had faced neglect historically. Ghosh highlighted recent efforts by the BJP-led government to prioritise the tea industry’s growth and expansion.

Investments and Future Prospects

Ghosh disclosed increasing interest from investors in Tripura’s tea sector, with signed agreements expected to yield around Rs 831 crore in proposed investments. This influx of investment is anticipated to significantly uplift the local industry, reinforcing Tripura’s position in the national tea market.

He further noted that investor confidence is boosted by the state’s favourable law and order situation, making it an attractive location for industrial development. Ghosh credited both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Manik Saha for their sustained support in advancing this initiative.

As the state approaches the launch of this auction centre, Ghosh expressed confidence that it will provide tea producers with an efficient and transparent platform for marketing their products. Collaboration from stakeholders in Guwahati and West Bengal is also reportedly assured, showcasing a robust network keen on contributing to this venture.

In summary, the establishment of the auction centre is viewed as a transformative step for Tripura’s tea industry. It is expected to catalyse further interest and investment, paving the way for enhanced competitiveness within the national tea market.
