TMC Turmoil Escalates As Sudip Bandyopadhyay Aligns With Rebels

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sudip Bandyopadhyay, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has reportedly joined a faction of rebel MPs within the party, along with 19 others. This development marks a significant escalation in the internal strife following the TMC’s substantial loss in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Earlier in the day, Bandyopadhyay was seen entering the residence of Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav in New Delhi, accompanied by fellow rebel MP Satabdi Roy.

The meeting with key leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has prompted speculation about the future alignment of several TMC MPs. Bandyopadhyay, described as a close associate of TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee, now appears to be shifting his allegiance, raising questions about the internal dynamics of the party.

Organisational Reshuffle Announced by TMC

Following the meetings in New Delhi, the TMC announced significant organisational changes. Bandyopadhyay was removed from his party posts, with Kunal Ghosh, who is considered loyal to the party, appointed as the new president of the North Kolkata organisational district. This decision was taken amid uncertainty regarding the party’s direction after the election defeat.

In addition, senior leaders Saugata Roy and Jyotipriya Mallick were incorporated into the National Working Committee. Changes were also announced for the youth wing of the party, with Arnab Banerjee replacing Saayoni Ghosh as the State Trinamool Youth Congress President. The rationale behind these appointments has not been publicly addressed by the TMC.

The reshuffle has triggered conjecture among political analysts, particularly given the timing during crucial electoral preparations. While the emerging leadership has raised eyebrows, Bandyopadhyay and Roy have yet to make public statements regarding their meetings or the implications for their party affiliations.

Political Speculation Surrounds TMC Leadership

A notable meeting occurred at the residence of TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee prior to the announcement of the organisational changes. Attendees included Abhishek Banerjee, Kalyan Banerjee, and several other senior figures. This gathering has amplified speculation about the strategic planning within the party as they approach vital electoral contests.

The presence of prominent party members and advisors suggested substantive discussions took place, although the specific topics remain undisclosed. The TMC has not officially correlated the leadership changes with the recent meetings in New Delhi, leaving a cloud of uncertainty regarding the future landscape of the party.

In light of the ongoing discord, TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee attempted to reduce concerns over Bandyopadhyay’s departure. He asserted that the party would remain unaffected by the actions of individual leaders and underscored that it would be the electorate who ultimately determines political outcomes. Banerjee stressed the importance of a critical opposition, emphasising that the primary duty of the opposition is to challenge the ruling government rather than align with it.

Banerjee further indicated that he believes the current ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is striving to diminish opposition strength nationally and regionally. He accused the BJP of undermining democratic institutions and constraining political freedoms for parties opposing it.
