TMC Leader Ramesh Patra Arrested in Hooghly for Multi-Crore Fraud

The CSR Journal Magazine

The arrest of Ramesh Patra, a leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has occurred in Jangipara, Hooghly district. This action is part of the local police’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign. Officials detained Patra on June 6, following allegations of significant financial misconduct involving intimidation and fraud.

The allegations against Patra stem from a complaint made by Tanmay Barui, a businessman residing in the Paspur area. In his written complaint to the Jangipara Police, Barui claimed that he was engaged in commercial dealings with the Adra-Bilaspur Cooperative Agricultural Development Society Limited. Patra allegedly exploited his political connections to promise Barui various governmental and administrative benefits.

Barui’s complaint details that, under the pretext of these promises, Patra reportedly collected around Rs 16 lakh through online transactions and an additional Rs 13 lakh in cash, paid in several instalments. The promises concerning benefits were never realised, prompting dissatisfaction from Barui.

Furthermore, Barui has alleged that when he confronted Patra over the unfulfilled promises, the TMC leader allegedly resorted to threatening him with violence, even suggesting that he could face death if he pursued the matter further. This severe reaction heightened the urgency of Barui’s complaint to the police.

Police Investigation and Actions Taken

Authorities are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into the matter. They are also looking into whether there are other influential political figures potentially involved in the alleged fraudulent activities. The case has attracted attention, and the police are exercising diligence in examining all aspects of the situation.

As the investigation progresses, further developments may reveal additional details regarding the extent of the alleged corruption and potential ramifications for those involved. The police have made it clear that they are committed to a thorough inquiry into all allegations made against Patra and any associates.
