A devastating accident occurred in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday when a runaway truck collided with a bus, resulting in three deaths and twenty-nine individuals sustaining injuries. The incident took place near the Industrial Area bridge under the jurisdiction of Kuthla police station. At the time, the bus was en route from Katni to Vijayraghavgarh, carrying approximately thirty-five passengers, while the truck approached from the opposite direction.

Circumstances of the Collision

According to Superintendent of Police Abhinav Vishwakarma, initial investigations suggest that a brake failure may have caused the truck driver to lose control. This loss of control led to a violent collision with the bus, causing it to overturn and trapping several passengers under the wreckage. Eyewitnesses reported that the impact of the crash instigated a scene of chaos, with people inside the bus struggling to escape.

The emergency response included the deployment of a crane to lift the overturned vehicle, which facilitated a rescue operation lasting over thirty-five minutes. Local residents collaborated with police officials and administrative staff to aid in retrieving victims and providing immediate assistance.

Among the injured, one young girl in critical condition was transported to the government medical college and hospital in Jabalpur, while the remaining victims were treated at the district hospital. Reports indicate that the truck driver also suffered injuries in the collision.

Identification of Victims

Authorities have identified the deceased passengers as Kishan Kol aged thirty, Neelam Prajapati, and Raju Choudhary. Their deaths have sparked an outpouring of grief within the local community. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav extended his condolences and subsequently announced financial compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each of the deceased individuals. Additionally, assistance of Rs 1 lakh was allocated for the critically injured girl.

Khaduraho BJP MP V.D. Sharma visited the injured individuals in the hospital, affirming that all necessary medical support will be provided to the victims. He acknowledged the assistance being rendered by the state government in response to the tragic incident.

The accident has raised serious questions about road safety and vehicle maintenance within the region. Local authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading up to the incident, focusing on the maintenance records of the truck involved.
