UP Govt Assures 3-Day Power Supply Even If Smart Meter Balance Runs Out

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a significant measure to alleviate consumer anxiety regarding power supply. On Sunday, officials confirmed that electricity supply will remain uninterrupted for three days, even if smart meters, which are set to be installed soon, run out of balance. This decision aims to ensure that consumers do not experience sudden disruptions during the transition to the new metering system.

Pause on Smart Meter Installations Pending Report

In addition to ensuring continuity of power supply, the state government has chosen to temporarily halt the installation of smart meters throughout Uttar Pradesh. This pause is in response to the need for a thorough evaluation of a report from a four-member technical committee that is yet to be submitted. The findings of this committee will be reviewed before any further action on the rollout is undertaken.

Energy Minister A.K. Sharma provided insights into the government’s approach during a departmental review meeting. He highlighted that once smart meters are operational, consumers can expect no power disruption for a period of 45 days. Sharma’s remarks suggest a commitment to maintaining a reliable energy supply, especially as summer temperatures rise.

As part of the initiative to foster transparency, Sharma announced the implementation of a comprehensive five-level SMS alert system. This system is designed to keep consumers informed about their billing status and balance updates, enhancing their engagement with service provisions while reducing possible confusion and grievances.

Efforts to Ensure Uninterrupted Power Supply

In light of the changing climate and increasing temperatures, the Energy Minister has emphasised the importance of uninterrupted power supply in the coming months. He has directed UPPCL (Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited) officials to ensure seamless connectivity during night hours, on Sundays, and on public holidays. This directive aims to address public demands for more reliable electricity, particularly during periods of high energy use.

Sharma’s instructions extend to expediting all pending maintenance works associated with power supply. He urged authorities to take proactive measures to mitigate potential breakdowns, thereby ensuring the availability of sufficient power during peak demand times. His calls for urgent action reflect the government’s recognition of the critical nature of energy provisions in current circumstances.

The government’s pause on the smart meter rollout, combined with assurances of a stable power supply, indicates a responsive approach to consumer needs during this transitional period. The emphasis on communication through SMS alerts is expected to build trust among residents while paving the way for future implementations of smart technology in the energy sector.
