The Patiala House Court Grants 45 More Days to NIA to Complete Investigation in Delhi Blast Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Patiala House Court has officially granted an extension of 45 days for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to continue its investigation into the Delhi blast case. This decision was made on April 21, 2023, following a request by the NIA for additional time to conclude its inquiries. The investigation concerns two individuals, Bilal Naseer Malla and Yasir Ahmed Dar.

Special NIA Judge granted the extension based on the agency’s application submitted alongside a prosecutorial report. The NIA has been investigating multiple suspects linked to the incident, which occurred on November 11, 2025, near the Red Fort in Delhi.

This marks the second extension granted to the NIA; previously, on February 13, 2023, the court had allowed a similar extension of 45 days to facilitate the ongoing investigations into the blast.

Details of the Blast Incident

A significant explosion reportedly occurred from a car near the historic Red Fort, resulting in heightened security concerns in the national capital. The NIA’s investigation has focused on various suspects linked to this incident, which has been classified as a high-intensity blast.

As per the regulations, the duration for investigations can be extended up to 180 days, with the initial period set at 90 days. The NIA has now utilised the extension provisions for a second time in this case, after initially seeking a 90-day extension for further inquiries related to additional suspects.

The agency’s meticulous approach aims to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blast, which has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about security measures.

Recent Developments Concerning the Accused

The legal representation for Malla and Dar, provided by defence counsel Piyush Sachdeva, has also filed petitions asking the jail authorities for permission to facilitate communication with their families. Alongside this, requests were made for these individuals to be allowed access to open spaces within the prison, as they are currently being held in isolation.

These applications have been submitted to jail authorities, who are tasked with making the final decisions regarding the requests. It is important to note that the conditions of confinement have drawn attention, particularly concerning the rights of the accused during the legal proceedings.

In the sequence of arrests, Aamir Rashid Mir was the first to be apprehended by the NIA on November 16, 2025. Following his arrest, subsequent detentions included various individuals, such as Jasir Bilal Wani and Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, among others. This cumulative effort aims to create a comprehensive profile of those involved and ascertain the underlying motives pertaining to the blast.
