The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two individuals in connection with unlawful explosives storage and transportation in Koderma district, Jharkhand. The arrests were made on July 23, 2026, following the recovery of 1,662 non-electric detonators and other incriminating materials during extensive searches in four separate locations. The arrested individuals, identified as Mahesh Mehta and Shankar Yadav, were allegedly linked to a criminal scheme associated with these hazardous materials.

According to the NIA, the duo’s actions reportedly endangered lives and property by facilitating the illegal storage and transport of explosives to another accused party. During the operation, the agency also seized five digital devices and cash amounting to Rs 16 lakh, indicating the scale of the illicit activities.

Background of the Investigation

This operation is part of an ongoing investigation into a motorcycle blast that occurred in the Saltora area and is believed to be linked to the individuals apprehended. Earlier in the investigation, three other suspects were arrested and subsequently charged in a case initiated by the NIA in October 2024. The case was triggered by an explosion that led to the death of an accused, Joydeb Mondal alias Bablu Mondal, during the unlawful transportation of explosives.

Initially, the NIA began probing the circumstances surrounding the explosion and soon discovered a wider criminal conspiracy involving illegally obtained explosives. The agency’s findings highlighted a network dedicated to the improper handling of these dangerous materials, exacerbating the risks to public safety.

Authorities have stressed the importance of the investigation, which remains active as they aim to trace the origins of the explosives and ascertain their intended use. The NIA is committed to dismantling the network involved in this dangerous trade.

In a related matter earlier that day, the NIA arrested Muhammadali KP, a prominent member of the Popular Front of India (PFI), in connection with a separate murder case in Kerala. KP was apprehended upon his return to Delhi’s IGI Airport after residing in Riyadh for the past four years. A reward of Rs 3 lakh had been announced for information leading to his arrest, and an Interpol Red Notice had also been issued.

This arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in the PFI-related case to 67, demonstrating the NIA’s broad focus on tackling organised crime and terrorism across various states. The agency’s dual approach not only tackles illegal explosives but also broader threats to national security, ensuring a multifaceted strategy in addressing criminal activities.
