The death toll from the recent flash floods in Nepal has tragically increased to 1,344, as more bodies have been recovered from the severely affected districts, according to police reports. Rescue operations remain in full swing, with teams actively searching for approximately 4,898 individuals who are still unaccounted for. As of now, over 13,000 people have been successfully rescued, as noted by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal.

The floods, which were instigated by an ice-rock avalanche that occurred near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, have significantly impacted northern and central regions of Nepal. The Bhotekoshi River has contributed to the devastation by carrying floodwaters downstream, causing extensive damage to homes, vehicles, roads, and bridges, as well as negatively affecting hydropower projects.

Authorities have reported that among the bodies recovered, 758 were identified as adults, and 85 were children. Tragically, 501 bodies were found in a condition that included missing body parts, attributed to the prolonged exposure to flood waters and debris. Of the bodies collected, 1,030 have been temporarily buried following essential procedures, including DNA collection, to facilitate identification.

Distribution of Bodies Recovered

Chitwan district has seen the highest number of recoveries, with around 360 bodies identified so far. Other districts involved in the recovery efforts include Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East, and Nawalparasi West. Alarmingly, reports indicate that over 600 of the missing individuals are children from the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Status updates are being closely monitored regarding the water levels in several critical rivers, including the Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali, Mahakali, Kankai, Kamal, Kamala, Babai, Eastern Rapti, and Western Rapti. For the eleventh consecutive day, joint rescue teams led by the Nepal Army have actively engaged in search and rescue operations, particularly in flood-affected hydropower projects, where it is believed that hundreds of workers may be trapped within tunnels.

In notable developments, two survivors were rescued on Friday from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project. The individuals, identified as Kabir Maharjan, aged 45, and Sanjay Sah, aged 30, work in supervisory roles on the project. Additionally, an Indian rescue team in collaboration with the Nepal Army has created a temporary access road inside the Chilime tunnel in the flood-affected Rasuwa district, facilitating the movement of heavy equipment to assist in ongoing rescue efforts.

Impact of the Floods Beyond Nepal

The floods have also resulted in loss of life on the Chinese side of the border, where reports indicate that at least 21 people have died, and over 500 individuals are still missing in Tibet. As search operations progressed in Nepal, officials continued their efforts to recover additional bodies, keep track of rising water levels, and maintain essential rescue operations in the hardest-hit areas.

The combination of natural disaster response and recovery operations underscores the challenging conditions faced by both rescue teams and affected families. The situation remains fluid as rescue and recovery efforts are expected to continue in the coming days, depending on weather conditions and the stability of the affected areas.
