Apple Limits iPhone Duo Purchases to Two Units Due to High Demand

The CSR Journal Magazine

The iPhone Duo became available for pre-order on October 16, 2026, and due to significant consumer interest ahead of its official sale date on October 23, Apple has implemented a purchase limit. Each customer is now allowed to buy a maximum of two units. This restriction is not exclusive to the iPhone Duo; it also applies to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

When customers visit Apple’s website and attempt to add more than two units of any of the latest iPhone models to their cart, they receive a clear notification stating, “A maximum of 2 iPhone Duo can be purchased per customer.” This limitation is not only present on the Indian website but has also been reported by shoppers in the United States, China, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

This restriction is reminiscent of Apple’s approach during the original iPhone launch in 2007, when the company also limited purchases to two units per individual to deter resellers. Although Apple has not officially clarified the reasons for the current limit, it appears to serve a similar purpose in light of the high demand for the iPhone Duo.

Market Response and Delivery Expectations

The timing of this purchase cap has attracted attention, as reports indicate that delivery dates for the iPhone Duo have already extended into January shortly after the pre-orders commenced. This suggests that the demand for the device is exceeding initial expectations, prompting Apple to manage the distribution of its stock more carefully.

In other markets, the restrictions have been even more stringent. In Japan and South Korea, customers are required to schedule a store pickup in advance for the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with walk-in purchases not being available at the time of launch. This indicates that Apple is taking proactive measures to ensure that the initial rollout is well-managed and that stock is allocated appropriately.

Counterpoint Research has projected that the iPhone Duo could capture approximately 25 per cent of the global foldable smartphone market, positioning Apple as the second-largest player behind Samsung, which holds a 38 per cent share. The same report estimates that Apple could ship nearly 6 million units of the iPhone Duo by 2026, despite its starting price being set at Rs 3 lakh. These figures are projections and not confirmed sales numbers.

Implications for the Foldable Market

The anticipated success of the iPhone Duo is indicative of a broader trend in the smartphone market, particularly within the foldable segment. Apple’s entry into this space is expected to stimulate growth in both sales and consumer adoption of foldable devices. As the company seeks to maintain a competitive edge, the restrictions on purchases may be a strategic move to ensure that early adopters do not monopolise the initial stock.

With the iPhone Duo’s launch generating considerable excitement, it is clear that Apple aims to create a balanced distribution of its products among consumers. By limiting the number of units each customer can purchase, the company is attempting to prevent resellers from acquiring large quantities, which could lead to inflated prices in secondary markets.

As the launch date approaches, it will be interesting to observe how the demand evolves and whether Apple will need to adjust its stock management strategies further. The success of the iPhone Duo could set a precedent for future releases and influence the overall dynamics of the foldable smartphone market.
