Rajasthan Boy, 9, Falls Into 640 Feet Deep Borewell During Repair, Rescue Ops Ongoing for Over 18 Hours

The CSR Journal Magazine

A nine-year-old boy fell into a 1,050-foot-deep borewell during repair work at a farm in Rajasthan’s Phalodi district on Thursday. The incident has prompted a significant rescue operation, which has been ongoing for more than 18 hours. The child is reportedly trapped at a depth of approximately 640 feet, and authorities are working diligently to bring him to safety.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm in the Pooniyon Ki Dhani area, where repair work was being undertaken on a malfunctioning borewell owned by the boy’s father, Pancharam Bhil. A machine was brought to the site to facilitate repairs when the child accidentally slipped into the open borewell.

Witnessing the incident, the boy’s father was in the process of removing the motor from the borewell. He stated that when he turned around, he could only see his son’s head and hands above the borewell opening. However, by the time he reached the location to assist his son, the child had already slipped further down, complicating the rescue efforts.

Rescue Operations Underway

Following the incident, police and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived promptly to initiate a rescue operation. Rescuers have lowered a camera into the borewell to ascertain the child’s position and evaluate his condition. Additionally, arrangements have been made to supply oxygen to the boy as efforts to reach him continue.

The depth of the borewell and its narrow opening have presented considerable challenges for the rescue teams. With limited visibility inside the shaft, officials are relying on camera footage to monitor the child’s movements and determine the best approach for extraction.

As the rescue operation progresses, the situation remains critical. The authorities are focused on ensuring the child’s safety while also managing the complexities posed by the borewell’s structure. The community is closely following the developments, hoping for a positive outcome.

Official Involvement and Community Response

Phalodi District Collector Ankit Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police Aditya Kakade have visited the rescue site to oversee the ongoing efforts. They have engaged with local leaders, including former MLA Kishanaram, to review the situation and ensure that all resources are being utilised effectively.

Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Pratap Singh confirmed that oxygen is being supplied to the child. He mentioned that the slight moisture and water present inside the borewell could assist in preventing dehydration, which is a concern given the circumstances.

At approximately 9 pm on Thursday, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from Ajmer arrived to provide additional support for the operation. As the rescue efforts continue, villagers are anxiously awaiting updates regarding the child’s condition, with hopes that he will be brought to safety soon.

As of now, the rescue operation remains active, with teams working tirelessly to navigate the challenges posed by the borewell. Further updates regarding the child’s condition are expected as the situation develops. The community continues to rally in support, demonstrating solidarity during this distressing time.
