Taslima Nasreen to Return to Kolkata After 18 Years; CM Suvendu Adhikari Expected to Attend Literary Event

Renowned author Taslima Nasreen is set to return to Kolkata after nearly two decades. The writer, who has frequently expressed her longing to return to the city, is making her comeback following political shifts in the state, with BJP State President Shamik Bhattacharya having previously advocated for her return. The development came to light through a social media post by Nasreen herself.

In November 2007, Kolkata witnessed widespread violent protests by hardliners demanding Nasreen’s expulsion. The unrest, which occurred during the tenure of late Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, escalated to the point where the army had to be deployed to restore order. Following the incident, Nasreen was forced to leave and was unable to return during Mamata Banerjee’s administration, despite expressing a strong desire to do so.

Poetry and Performance at Rabindra Sadan

A special event is being organized on August 1 at the iconic Rabindra Sadan by the organizations “Secular Mission” and “For West Bengal.”

Confirming her attendance, the event organizer stated: “Taslima is returning to Kolkata after 18 years. She will be reciting her poetry, performing songs, and sharing her thoughts on stage. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has also promised to grace the occasion with his presence.”

Mixed Reactions and Appeals for Caution

Reacting to the news, former IPS officer Humayun Kabir who was a police official in the state when Nasreen was forced to leave during the Left Front regime welcomed the move but urged caution. “I welcome the author back. While a section of people previously had strong reservations about her, I personally appreciate her literary work and am glad she is returning. My only hope is that she refrains from making remarks that could spark fresh controversies,” Kabir said.
