Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Report Significant Voter Turnouts of 37.57% and 41.11% Respectively Till 11 AM

The states of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have witnessed significant voter participation during the initial hours of polling. As of 11 am on April 23, West Bengal registered a turnout of 41.11 per cent, whereas Tamil Nadu reported a turnout of 37.57 per cent, according to data from the Election Commission of India. This early engagement is being seen as a positive indicator for the democratic process in both states.

Tamil Nadu Voting Details

In Tamil Nadu, Tiruppur district emerged as the front-runner with a voter turnout of 42.45 per cent, followed closely by Namakkal and Erode, which recorded 41.41 per cent and 41.00 per cent, respectively. Conversely, Chennai district’s turnout was recorded at 35.47 per cent, showing a relatively lower level of participation compared to other areas. Coimbatore and Madurai reported turnouts of 38.62 per cent and 36.22 per cent, respectively, while the Nilgiris district had the lowest turnout at 32.62 per cent.

Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape features over 5.73 crore voters, which includes 2,93,04,905 female voters, 2,80,30,658 male voters, and 7,728 third-gender voters. Additionally, the state is catering to 14,59,039 first-time voters and 68,501 service voters. As of now, 4,18,541 postal votes have already been received. Archana Patnaik, the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu, mentioned that 62 counting centres have been set up to facilitate a seamless counting process following today’s electoral activities.

West Bengal’s Voting Scenario

In West Bengal, the first phase of elections is being conducted across 152 Assembly constituencies. Paschim Mednipur district reported the highest voter turnout at 44.68 per cent, followed by Jhargam at 43.71 per cent and Bankura at 43.22 per cent. Malda district recorded the lowest turnout at 38.22 per cent. The Election Commission of India has detailed that the second phase will include 142 seats, with a total of 1,478 candidates contesting in this phase.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking her fourth consecutive term in this election cycle. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), having secured 77 seats in the previous election, is making significant efforts to enhance its presence in the state. The outcome of the elections is anticipated with great interest, as multiple parties are competing for the 294 Assembly seats available.

Polling is taking place under stringent security measures, reflecting the importance of maintaining order during this crucial democratic exercise. Voting will continue until 6:00 pm today, with the counting of votes planned for May 4. Various political leaders and notable figures, including Chief Minister MK Stalin and actor Rajinikanth, cast their votes early in the day.
