Tamil Nadu To Shut Liquor Stores Located Near Bus Stands, Schools and Religious Sites

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, has mandated the closure of 717 government-run TASMAC liquor outlets located within a 500-metre radius of places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stations. This directive is aimed at enhancing public welfare and is to be implemented within a two-week timeframe following his assumption of office.

Upon taking office, CM Vijay initiated a survey to identify TASMAC retail shops operating in close proximity to sensitive public areas. The survey revealed that a total of 4,765 TASMAC outlets are currently in operation across the state. Of these, 717 shops fall within the specified 500-metre radius around places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stops.

During a press release, details were provided regarding the number of closures categorised by location. Specifically, there are 276 shops near places of worship, 186 shops adjacent to educational institutions, and 255 shops close to bus stands that are slated for closure under this order.

Community Response to Liquor Outlet Closures

The closure of these TASMAC liquor outlets is a significant step toward addressing public concerns regarding accessibility to alcohol near sensitive areas. While these stores contribute a substantial revenue stream for the Tamil Nadu government, there has been bipartisan support advocating for the closure of specific retail outlets, signifying a collective concern for community welfare.

In previous discussions, multiple political parties have raised issues related to the impact of liquor shops on public morality and safety. The calls for closure reflect a wider sentiment among various segments of society, who believe that such measures are necessary for the betterment of local communities.

The TASMAC corporation itself has faced increased scrutiny, with investigations being conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). These probes are connected to alleged violations linked to TASMAC and its associated entities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), indicating that the liquor outlet system is under further examination by authorities.

Implications for the Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Landscape

As a result of CM Vijay’s directive, significant changes are anticipated in the local liquor retail landscape in Tamil Nadu. The government’s efforts to relocate retail liquor outlets could reshape consumer behaviour and potentially reduce incidental access to alcohol in zones with schools and places of worship, aligning with broader public health goals.

Analysts suggest that while the closures may temporarily affect revenue from liquor sales, they could foster a healthier environment in the long term. The focus on community safety and welfare is viewed as a priority, with various stakeholders awaiting the government’s next steps regarding the management of TASMAC outlets.

This latest initiative contributes to ongoing discussions concerning alcohol consumption and its regulation within Tamil Nadu. In light of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) manifesto promise of a drug-free state, continued dialogue on substance regulations can be expected in the future as authorities work to balance revenue generation with public welfare considerations.
