Surge in Hip Replacements Observed Among Younger Post-Covid Patients

The CSR Journal Magazine

Recent reports indicate a worrying trend in India, where healthcare professionals are observing a significant increase in cases of hip arthritis and avascular necrosis (AVN) among individuals in their 30s and 40s. This demographic, traditionally not considered at risk for severe hip complications, is now facing higher incidences of these serious conditions. The alarming trend was brought to light at the 2nd DELHI HIP 360 Conference held in New Delhi, where leading orthopaedic experts discussed the growing demand for Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgeries in younger patients who have recently recovered from COVID-19.

Experts attribute a portion of this rise to the excessive use of steroids during the treatment of COVID-19. While these medications were crucial in managing the virus, their uncontrolled use may have led to adverse long-term effects for some individuals, resulting in an increase in hip-related health issues.

Doctors have reported a nearly 40 per cent increase in hip replacement surgeries among younger patients in comparison to figures recorded before the pandemic. This surge is alarming as these patients may face life-long consequences due to hip damage.

Understanding Avascular Necrosis and Its Impact

Avascular necrosis, once commonly associated with older adults or those with chronic health conditions, presents a concerning challenge following COVID-19. International studies suggest that high doses of steroids used during treatment for the virus are linked to osteonecrosis of the femoral head, particularly in individuals with pre-existing metabolic or vascular issues. Medical professionals highlighted the necessity of early detection, which can significantly alter the prognosis for affected individuals.

If identified at the onset, medical practitioners might be able to implement non-surgical interventions that could preserve the joint’s functionality. Conversely, once substantial bone collapse occurs, total hip replacement often becomes the only viable option.

Experts at the conference emphasised that any ongoing hip or groin pain after COVID-19 recovery should not be disregarded and called for timely medical assessments to facilitate early diagnosis.

Role of Lifestyle Changes in Worsening Joint Health

Dr Ashwani Maichand, a leading orthopaedic director, indicated that changes in lifestyle during the pandemic have aggravated joint health issues among younger adults. The shift towards more sedentary lifestyles, coupled with increased weight and delayed medical consultations, has led to a worsening of conditions like AVN. Many younger individuals now present with symptoms well in advance of what previous generations experienced, prompting surgeries that occur nearly a decade earlier than anticipated.

Dr Maichand pointed out that continuous symptoms such as hip pain and limping often surface months after COVID recovery, making timely medical intervention crucial for better outcomes.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity and weight control, has been highlighted as essential for joint health, particularly in the context of the lingering effects of COVID-19.

Advancements in Hip Replacement Techniques

The conference also showcased advancements in hip replacement procedures, underscoring developments in robotic-assisted techniques and minimally invasive surgeries. Medical professionals noted that these innovations have led to quicker recovery times, enabling patients to resume their daily activities more swiftly than in the past.

Dr Gaurav Govil explained that with improvements in surgical technology and rehabilitation strategies, Total Hip Replacement remains a highly successful procedure in contemporary orthopaedics. However, he reiterated the importance of awareness and early treatment to optimise surgical outcomes.

Experts cautioned that without increased public awareness surrounding the responsible use of steroids and the early signs of hip complications, India may face a dramatic rise in hip replacement surgeries in the near future. The overarching message was clear: persistent hip pain should not be overlooked, as early intervention can substantially mitigate the risk of long-term disability.
