Supreme Court Seeks Compliance Report from NTA Over NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak Allegations

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding a series of petitions, including one from the United Doctors Front (UDF). These petitions call for the dissolution of the NTA, which has been accused of mishandling the NEET-UG 2026 examination due to alleged paper leaks. The Court is also being asked to order a re-examination conducted under the supervision of a panel led by a former Supreme Court judge.

Court Highlights Previous Interventions and Calls for Accountability

During the proceedings, a bench led by Justice PS Narasimha remarked that the NTA has seemingly not “learnt its lesson” from previous Supreme Court interventions concerning examination integrity. The Court instructed the NTA to provide an update on its compliance with various reforms and monitoring mechanisms that had been previously mandated.

The bench recalled the establishment of a high-powered committee after the NEET-UG 2024 controversy, which had formulated recommendations that had been accepted by the NTA. Additionally, a monitoring committee had been set up to ensure the implementation of the recommended reforms. As a result, the Court directed the NTA to submit an affidavit detailing its compliance status with these mechanisms.

Justice Narasimha also instructed K. Radhakrishnan, who serves as the Chairman of the monitoring committee, to file a report confirming adherence to the Court’s earlier directives. The case has been scheduled for further hearing on Thursday.

Petitions Call for Comprehensive Reforms in Examination System

The requests made in the petitions aim for extensive structural reforms within the examination system. Key suggestions include the replacement of the NTA with a new statutory body, to be established through an Act of Parliament, given the persistent allegations of irregularities in national-level entrance examinations.

Furthermore, the Court directed that copies of these petitions be shared with Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represents the Centre, and the other involved authorities. This action underscores the seriousness with which the Court is treating the ongoing issues surrounding the examination process.

Dr. Lakshya Mittal, who chairs the United Doctors Front, expressed that the Court’s observations highlight the significant concerns raised by students and other stakeholders regarding the functioning of the NTA. He reiterated that the UDF remains devoted to promoting transparency, accountability, and the necessary structural reforms in the examination framework.
