Six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs Join Shiv Sena Led by Eknath Shinde

The CSR Journal Magazine

On June 22, six Lok Sabha members from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction officially switched allegiance to the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in Mumbai. The MPs who made this transition are Sanjay Haribhau Jadhav, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, Omprakash Bhupalsingh Nimbalkar, Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh, and Nagesh Bapurao Patil Ashtikar. This move concluded days of speculation regarding their political intentions.

Eknath Shinde Addresses Media

In a press conference, Eknath Shinde expressed that this shift by the six MPs marks a continuation of the political bifurcation that began in 2022. Shinde characterised the MPs’ decision to join his faction as a strategy aimed at “saving the original Shiv Sena.” He emphasised that their motivations were aligned with the development of their respective constituencies rather than personal ambitions.

During his address, Shinde welcomed the MPs into what he termed the “original Shiv Sena of Balasaheb Thackeray and Anand Dighe.” He highlighted the significance of their arrival by linking it to the 2022 revolt when a group of forty MLAs sided with him, leading to a split within the party. He stated that this new membership is part of the second phase of the movement to uphold Shiv Sena’s foundational ideologies.

Additionally, Shinde directed remarks towards Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena (UBT), implying a rivalry and asserting that the joining of the six MPs consolidates his faction’s position. He noted, “Today, six MPs have joined us. So, we have three Sanjays here with us,” indicating the presence of multiple political figures with the same first name within his camp.

Political Context and Future Implications

Shinde underscored that the 2022 revolt had garnered public endorsement, leading the Shiv Sena to expand its representation from forty to sixty MLAs. He remarked on Omraje Nimbalkar’s generous spirit in choosing to switch allegiance after consulting with his constituents. Shinde described Nimbalkar as a ‘real star’ and reiterated that the MPs are joining solely for the collective betterment of their constituencies.

This realignment highlights ongoing internal challenges within the Shiv Sena (UBT), which previously had nine MPs in the Lok Sabha. The party has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the six MPs who defected, reflecting the tensions remaining in the fragmented political landscape. A parliamentary meeting convened by the Shiv Sena (UBT) last week reportedly only attracted attendance from three of its Lok Sabha members.

As the political scenario continues to evolve, Shinde’s faction appears poised to strengthen its claims to legitimacy within the Maharashtra political framework, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) works to manage the fallout from this substantial defection. The intricate dynamics of Maharashtra politics remain under close scrutiny as both factions navigate their future strategies.
