Shoe Hurled at CJI Gavai in Courtroom; PM Modi Condemns Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

What was the incident?

During a hearing in the Supreme Court, a person named Mr. Kishore tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai. Kishore was also seen shouting slogans before being immediately escorted out of the courtroom.

The unusual incident caused a brief disruption of the proceedings for a few minutes before the session resumed.

Disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma

He was seen shouting, “Sanatan Dharma ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan” (“India will not tolerate disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma”) and was then removed from the courtroom.

One of the witnesses shared that the person tried to throw a shoe, while another said he tried to throw a roll of paper.

The man was wearing a lawyer’s robe, and it was later confirmed that he was indeed a lawyer.

Despite the disturbance, Chief Justice Gavai remained composed and continued with the day’s proceedings. Asking the next lawyer to make submissions, the CJI remarked, “Don’t get distracted. We are not distracted by this.”

Shoe was thrown

Lawyers present in the courtroom confirmed to The CSR Journal that a shoe was hurled at the judge. One lawyer stated that the shoe “brushed against the Chief Justice and another Justice and fell behind them.”

Kishore was later suspended from practice.

Advocate Ravi Shanker Jha, who was present during the incident, shared that Mr. Kishore “threw his shoe and raised his hand to indicate that he had thrown it.”
Jha said, “After he was apprehended by courtroom security, the Chief Justice told the lawyers to continue their arguments and not get distracted.”

Jha added that Chief Justice Gavai remained calm throughout.

What caused this incident?

In an interaction with the media, Kishore said the incident was related to a court petition that was being heard by the Chief Justice, during which he allegedly made an uncalled-for remark about the Hindu god Vishnu.

He had dismissed a plea for the reconstruction of a 7-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at a temple in Madhya Pradesh. During that hearing, the Chief Justice reportedly said:
“This is purely publicity interest litigation… Go and ask the deity himself to do something.”

This comment led to controversy, with some accusing Justice Gavai of making fun of Hindu beliefs.

Later, Justice Gavai withdrew his statement, saying that he respects all religions.

PM condemned the act

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to CJI Gavai and called the incident “utterly condemnable.”
Modi said there is no place for such acts and that it has angered all Indians.
