Shocking: Bharat Bhushan Tiwari Killed in Encounter for Questioning Bihar Government

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, a 28-year-old man, was killed in an encounter by Bihar Police on June 17, in the Bhojpur district, specifically in the Shahpur police station area. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjeev Jha raised serious concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding Tiwari’s death, labelling it a potential fake encounter. According to Jha, Tiwari was allegedly targeted for questioning the ruling government’s actions and policies.

Jha argued that if there were any allegations against Tiwari, he should have been apprehended and processed through proper legal channels. He called for transparency regarding the incident, stating that asking questions in a democracy should not lead to extrajudicial killings. Jha described Tiwari as a young individual committed to social causes, indicating that he had approached the government with public issues.

Local testimonies suggested that Tiwari had no prior criminal record, raising questions about the police’s justification for the encounter. Jha articulated that there should have been a competent police response rather than lethal force, asserting that democratic societies must provide platforms for citizens to voice their concerns.

Concerns About Accountability and Governance

Sanjeev Jha highlighted that if the police deemed Tiwari a serious threat, they could have taken him into custody rather than resorting to lethal measures. He noted that video evidence showed police personnel interacting with Tiwari, prompting questions regarding their actions. Jha speculated whether the government was creating an environment that pushed individuals into criminality to rationalise extreme measures such as encounters.

The AAP leader stated that the intentional elimination of individuals who raise pertinent questions could instil fear within society. He expressed concern that such actions undermine the foundational principles of democracy, which are meant to protect citizens. According to Jha, if citizens can be exterminated for merely questioning authority, it portends a grim future for the democratic fabric of the country.

Jha also extended his critique to the broader implications of the government’s alleged actions, asserting that these practices could lead to a drift towards authoritarianism. He emphasized the role of government to safeguard the populace, and remarked that the current approach appeared to contradict this mandate.

Wider Implications of Intimidation Tactics

Further expanding on the issues raised, Jha commented on the general atmosphere of intimidation reported in areas governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he referred to as the ‘ED Party.’ He pointed out that various tactics, including demolitions of homes and manipulations through financial investigation agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), were being used to suppress dissent.

According to Jha, such practices have engendered widespread anger among the populace, who feel threatened by arbitrary government actions. He argued that it is entirely acceptable for citizens to express their displeasure concerning a government’s mismanagement, and remarked that silence could be interpreted as complicity.

In a cultural reference, Jha likened current political leaders to figures from mythology, stating that they often present themselves as virtuous during elections, only to act contrary to their promises once in power. He asserted that such duplicity ultimately harms the very electorate that supports them.

Closing his comments, Jha emphasised that the strength of Indian democracy must be protected against those who seek to erode it. He expressed hope that the government would respond to the calls for accountability, noting that citizens have historically found ways to hold authorities responsible for their actions.
