Sensex Gains 62 Points, Nifty Rises 16 Points Amid Mixed Sector Trends

The CSR Journal Magazine

The benchmark indices witnessed a slight increase on Friday, recovering from a series of losses. The BSE Sensex gained 62.09 points, equivalent to 0.08%, reaching 77,599.81 points. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 rose 16.05 points, or 0.07%, to settle at 24,247.90 points as of 10 am. The previous closing figures were 77,537.72 for the Sensex and 24,231.85 for the Nifty.

On this day, the Nifty managed to break a seven-session streak of losses, while the Sensex similarly halted its recent downward trend. This modest recovery prompted cautious optimism among investors.

Although there were improvements, the overall gains remained constrained due to rising crude oil prices and pressures in the global bond markets, which continued to influence investor sentiment.

Current Crude Oil Prices and Bond Yields

Brent crude was observed trading at $93.52 per barrel, reflecting a decrease of 0.28%, while WTI crude was priced at $86.44, down 0.45%. Despite this slight decline, crude oil prices have remained persistently high, which has kept investors on the lookout for further developments.

Dr V K Vijayakumar, the Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, indicated that the recent market rally may find it challenging to sustain momentum as Brent crude nears the $94 mark. The increase in US bond yields is another factor contributing to market caution. He mentioned that profit booking, particularly in large-cap stocks, could further weigh on the Nifty’s performance.

Investors are advised to stay alert, as weakening in large-cap stocks might restrict the potential for a sustained market rally in the near term.

Sectoral Trends and Stock Performance

The early trading session displayed mixed sectoral trends. The Nifty Metal sector emerged as the top gainer, increasing by 0.80%, while the Nifty Private Bank index followed closely with a gain of 0.69%. Furthermore, Nifty Realty recorded an increase of 0.68%, alongside modest gains in Nifty Financial Services and Nifty PSU Bank.

Conversely, while some sectors performed well, Nifty IT was notably among the laggards, declining by 0.64%. Additional declines were seen in sectors such as Nifty FMCG and Nifty Auto, dropping by 0.61% and 0.34% respectively. The performance of Nifty Pharma also reflected a decrease of 0.21%.

On the stock front, Kotak Mahindra Bank saw the highest gain within Sensex components, rising by 1.52%, while notable gains were recorded by companies like Tata Steel, SBI, and HDFC Bank. In contrast, IndiGo was identified as the largest loser in the index, falling by 1.17%.

Broader Market Performance and Future Outlook

In the sphere of broader market indices, Nifty Smallcap 100 was the standout performer, recording a rise of 0.77%. Nifty 500 saw a slight increase of 0.03%, while Nifty 100 remained largely unchanged. However, declines were noted in Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap 100, which fell by 0.26% and 0.16%, respectively.

India VIX, an indicator of market volatility, increased by 4.69%, reaching 11.26. Dr Vijayakumar highlighted the sustained buying interest from both domestic and foreign institutional investors as a positive sign for broader market momentum.

He commented on the resilience of the digital platform sector and the ongoing interest in pharma stocks, despite high valuations. The overall market may experience range-bound activity as long as crude oil prices remain elevated.
