Security Cover for TMC Leaders Recalibrated Amid Political Transition; Y-Category Protection for TMC MP Sparks Debate

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the aftermath of a major political transition in West Bengal and the formation of a new BJP-led government following the ousting of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a noticeable reshaping of security arrangements for former ruling party leaders has triggered widespread political discussion.

Security cover for several senior TMC figures—including Abhishek Banerjee, former minister Firhad Hakim, and Rajya Sabha MP and former DGP Rajiv Kumar—has reportedly been scaled down by state authorities. According to administrative sources, convoy strength and personal protection details have been significantly reduced as part of a broader restructuring of VIP security protocols.

However, a contrasting development has emerged around TMC MP from Barasat, North 24 Parganas, Kakali Ghosh Dastidar, who has been granted ‘Y’ category central security cover, drawing sharp attention from both political observers and the public.

Since Monday, personnel from the CISF have been deployed at Kakali’s residence in Madhyamgram. Security arrangements now also accompany her during official movements, including visits to party offices and organisational meetings in the Barasat region. Residents in the area have noted the visible presence of armed personnel, marking a significant shift in her security profile.

Party position changes and social media post

The development comes shortly after internal changes within the Trinamool Congress led to Kakali’s removal from her position as Chief Whip of the party in the Lok Sabha. Subsequently, Kalyan Banerjee was reinstated to the post.

Following her removal, Kakali posted a strongly worded message on social media, referencing her long political journey. In her post, she reflected on decades of association with the party, writing about her political engagement since the late 1970s and early 1980s, a statement that quickly sparked debate within political circles and the Trinamool ecosystem.

Party insiders suggest the post reflected growing dissatisfaction over her changed role within the parliamentary structure.

The official rationale behind granting ‘Y’ category security has not been disclosed. However, political reactions have been sharply divided.

Leaders from the BJP have argued that threat perceptions can arise from internal party dynamics and past incidents of political violence in the state. They maintain that as a Member of Parliament, security assessments fall within the Centre’s jurisdiction when credible inputs are received.

Mixed reactions within TMC

Within the TMC, the development has triggered mixed responses—ranging from surprise at the enhanced security cover to unease over its timing, especially amid simultaneous reductions in security for other senior leaders.

Observers note that Kakali has maintained a long-standing association with party supremo Mamata Banerjee, dating back to their student political days in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their political partnership has been widely regarded as one of the enduring alignments within the party’s history.

Internal reorganisation and political messaging

The reinstatement of Kalyan Banerjee as Chief Whip is being interpreted by some within political circles as part of a broader organisational recalibration following electoral setbacks. His return is seen as a reinforcement of a more assertive parliamentary strategy for the party.

Meanwhile, analysts suggest that the simultaneous tightening and relaxation of security protocols for different leaders may signal shifting political equations rather than purely administrative decisions.

As Kakali remains silent on the development, the issue continues to generate speculation within Bengal’s political landscape. With contrasting security decisions and ongoing internal reshuffles within the TMC, observers believe the coming weeks may further clarify the evolving balance of power in the state’s post-transition political order.
