Search Operations Intensify for Missing Uttarakhand Trekker

The CSR Journal Magazine

The search for 23-year-old trekker Babita Pandey, missing in Uttarkashi district since May 29, has escalated significantly. Over 120 personnel from various agencies are engaged in coordinated efforts to find her. These agencies include the local police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Forest Department, and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The operation also involves local residents and guides.

Three separate search teams have been established, covering different hiking paths, while three drone teams are providing aerial support. Ground teams are thoroughly combing through trails, forests, ravines, and streams, ensuring no area is overlooked in this challenging terrain.

Details Surrounding Babita’s Disappearance

According to police reports, Babita travelled to Uttarkashi accompanied by friends Harmanpal Singh and Harmanpreet Singh. The group visited several tourist spots, including Harsil and Gangotri, before staying in Raithal village on May 28. Security footage captured Babita with her friends at this location.

The trio commenced their trek to Dayara Bugyal on May 29, spending a night at the Goi Base Camp. Babita was reportedly last seen at the campsite shortly after midnight, leading to concerns for her safety when she failed to return.

In addition to ground searches, aerial reconnaissance operations have been conducted using a helicopter to survey Dayara Bugyal and surrounding areas that are difficult to access. Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police Kamlesh Upadhyay confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 140(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Meanwhile, her two companions have been taken into custody for questioning as part of the investigation.

Concerns Over Permit Validity and Agency Investigation

As the search continues, officials uncovered that the trekkers lacked valid digital permits, as required through the official Explore Uttarkashi portal. Allegations suggest that the Raithal-based trekking agency known as Pro Mountain may have utilised forged documentation, prompting the suspension of its registration amid fraud allegations.

This revelation has raised additional concerns as the situation unfolds. Authorities are encouraging the public to assist by providing any information that could help in locating Babita. The investigation is looking into all potential angles surrounding her disappearance, including the possibility of a personal dispute among those involved.

As of now, authorities remain hopeful but acknowledge the complexities of the search operation. The efforts will continue, drawing on the combined resources of various organisations to ensure a thorough and comprehensive search for Babita Pandey.
