Scientists Unveil Largest-Ever 3D Map of the Universe: 47 Million Galaxies Mapped!

The completion of the largest 3D map of the universe represents a significant milestone in astronomical research. This extensive mapping of the cosmos was achieved a year ahead of schedule, culminating in the project known as DESI, or Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. This initiative provides crucial insights into the distribution of galaxies and stars throughout space, helping to address fundamental questions pertaining to cosmology, particularly the enigma surrounding dark energy.

Located at the Nicholas U Mayall 4-metre telescope in Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, DESI employs an advanced camera equipped with 5,000 fibre optic “eyes” to focus on distant cosmic objects every 20 minutes. This innovative technology allows for meticulous data collection over a prolonged period, beginning in May 2021 and encompassing five years of observational work.

The final output is an expansive map detailing over 47 million galaxies and quasars, surpassing the initial objective of 34 million. Additionally, approximately 20 million stars have also been included in the mapping effort, which covered an area of 14,000 square degrees of the sky—equating to roughly one-third of the entire celestial canopy. This remarkable map traces cosmic events across 11 billion years by analysing the light emitted from these astronomical entities.

Understanding Dark Energy Through Mapping

The universe’s continuation from the Big Bang is widely recognised, yet the discovery made about 25 years ago revealed that this expansion is accelerating, primarily driven by dark energy—an elusive force constituting around 70 per cent of the universe. The new map produced by DESI is instrumental in enhancing comprehension of dark energy, enabling researchers to observe the clustering of galaxies at distinct epochs in cosmic history.

Preliminary findings from the first three years of data have already suggested that dark energy may not be a consistent force and could vary as the universe evolves. This notion will be rigorously examined through the comprehensive five-year dataset accumulated, which encompasses six times more astronomical objects than prior surveys combined, contributing to deeper insights and predictions regarding the universe’s eventual fate.

Despite this significant achievement, DESI is not set to cease its operations. The instrument is scheduled to continue observations until 2028, aiming to enhance the existing map by a further 20 per cent and refining coverage in areas challenging to map, particularly near the Milky Way. Researchers anticipate obtaining substantial results related to dark energy by 2027, with further discoveries likely following shortly thereafter.

The ongoing observations with DESI promise to keep unlocking the intricacies of the universe’s structure and facilitate a better understanding of the forces that govern its expansion. With the goal of expanding the data set and refining previous information, the project is set to broaden its scope significantly in the coming years while focusing on specific areas that require detailed analysis.
