School girl dies in Maharashtra’s Vasai after being made to do 100 squats as punishment

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a shocking incident, a 12-year-old school girl in Maharashtra’s Vasai passed away after allegedly being made to do 100 squats by her teacher. This was her punishment for reaching 10 minutes late to school, which cost the child her life. The deceased student has been identified as Kajal Gaud (age 12), who was studying in the sixth standard. The shocking incident took place in Maharashtra’s Vasai (East) area on November 8.

The student’s health deteriorated due to this severe punishment, and she later died while undergoing treatment. Shri Hanumant Vidya High School in the Sativli area of Vasai East is under scanner after the horrific incident. The police have started an inquiry into the matter.

Student finished 100 squats, fell ill soon after

The teacher reportedly made Kajal and a few other students stand outside the classroom and ordered them to do squats as punishment for coming late to school. While some students stopped after doing nearly 20 squats, Kajal completed 100 squats despite having difficulty and pain. The very next day, the student’s health began to deteriorate.

Kajal was first admitted to Aastha Hospital in Vasai and later shifted to Vijay Lakshmi Hospital in Nalasopara. When her condition further deteriorated, she was shifted to JJ hospital for advanced treatment. However, despite medical efforts, the student passed away on Children’s Day.

School under scanner following student’s death

Severity of punishment which led to a student’s death has prompted investigation against school authorities. Shri Hanumant Vidya High School, allegedly has authorisation only up to the 8th standard but is teaching students up to the 10th standard, which has raised the question whether the school is operating illegally.

A teacher from the school said, “It is not known how many sit-ups this child had done. One really does not know if she died due to it or otherwise.”

Block Education Officer Pandurang Galange said an inquiry is being conducted into the child’s death. “The probe will reveal the exact cause of her death,” he said. Education Officer has assured that a thorough inquiry into the incident will be conducted and all information will be forwarded to senior officials.

Efforts will be made to gather information and take action regarding the school’s violation of recognition by teaching up to the 10th standard when it is only recognized up to the 8th. The officer confirmed that an application would be filed to register a case/crime against the school.
