Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), has launched a pointed criticism of the central government regarding its approach to student protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Raut claimed the government is selectively targeting students while allegedly providing protection to criminals who join the ruling party. He stated, “All kinds of criminals enter your party—rapists, individuals facing serious legal accusations, and those involved in financial crimes. You clean them up and welcome them into your fold, yet you treat the young protesters starkly differently.”

The MP expressed his concerns during a press interaction, pointing out that despite reaching a consensus that FIRs against student protesters would be withdrawn, fresh charges have instead been registered. He accused the government of undermining the futures of young individuals by adding new legal provisions against them in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi.

Protests and Criminal Cases

Raut’s statements reflect broader concerns about the handling of peaceful protests, as he questioned the rationale behind respondent inquiries into those offering logistical assistance to demonstrators. He implied that this approach reveals a level of fear within the government, suggesting that the administration should focus instead on more significant issues, such as the alleged financial dealings behind political funding.

Government’s Response and Recent Developments

Raut’s remarks followed statements from Saurav Das, the chief spokesperson for the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who indicated that government representatives had assured the withdrawal of FIRs and the release of arrested protesters. Furthermore, the Assam government announced on July 24, 2023, its commitment to revoke any legal actions related to participants in the protests surrounding NEET-UG examination discrepancies.

The Assam government pledged to assess arrests, free detained protesters, and initiate moves to withdraw all cases tied to the demonstrations. Following these developments, the nationwide agitation ceased on July 25, after the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The government subsequently reached an agreement with CJP and activist Sonam Wangchuk to address the protesters’ concerns effectively, vowing to withdraw cases against them and prevent police harassment.

With the recent commitments made by the government, students and protesters hope for a resolution to the legal actions initiated against them. The continuing discussions suggest that while some measures are being implemented, the apprehensions highlighted by Raut and other leaders persist in the ongoing dialogue about governance and student rights in India.
