Rebel Trinamool Congress Camp Faces Internal Strife as Cracks Emerge Within Faction

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent takeover of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislature party by 60 rebel MLAs has begun to unravel, revealing divisions among them. This discord is primarily centred around the ongoing role of party chief Mamata Banerjee, who has been suggested to function merely as a “chief adviser.” Some members of the rebel faction express dissatisfaction with this arrangement, advocating for her to remain the supreme leader.

Ritabrata Banerjee, now recognised as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) after a successful claim, has publicly stated his intention to keep the TMC united despite this internal conflict. However, his characterization of Banerjee as an adviser has reportedly caused unrest among certain members, who feel that her leadership should not be diminished in any capacity.

During a press interaction, Ritabrata acknowledged Mamata’s status as party chief, yet the suggestion to limit her role has drawn criticism within the rebel camp. Members are vocal about their desire for her to lead, reiterating a commitment to her authority.

Concerns Over Leadership Dynamics

The tensions surfaced following a meeting led by Ritabrata, where many rebel MLAs reaffirmed their loyalty to Mamata, the architect of the party’s formation from Congress in 1998. The discontent among the MLAs appears to stem more from dissatisfaction with Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata’s nephew, rather than Mamata’s influence. They argue that his leadership style has contributed to internal rifts.

A significant incident known as ‘Signgate’, in which several MLAs alleged forgery of their signatures in support of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as LoP, has further exacerbated hostility towards Abhishek. Despite the revolt, many MLAs still retain a strong emotional and political affinity for Mamata, reflecting her longstanding role within the party.

Rebel MLA Gulshan Mullick articulated the sentiments of his colleagues by asserting the need for Mamata’s leadership. He suggested potential exits from the Ritabrata-led alliance if Mamata’s position is not solidified as the supreme leader, underscoring the fragile nature of the newly formed group.

Challenges for Ritabrata Ahead

The dynamics within the rebel camp indicate a broader debate concerning Mamata Banerjee’s role post-revolt. In their communication to the Speaker, the rebel MLAs acknowledged her leadership, suggesting a critical contradiction in their stance. This situation illustrates a complex narrative where the rebellion, aimed at challenging TMC’s leadership, has led to an unexpected affirmation of Mamata’s influence.

Efforts by MLAs like Sangeeta Roy Basunia to publicly endorse Mamata as the leader reflect their attempts to navigate the repercussions of the rebellion without appearing to undermine the party’s foundations. Political analysts speculate that contradictions prevalent within the Ritabrata bloc may hinder its cohesion.

Amid these developments, expert Saswati Sarkar highlighted the difficulties faced by the Ritabrata-led faction, suggesting that maintaining an effective opposition while acknowledging Mamata’s leadership will prove challenging. The future of the rebel group remains uncertain, and it will be imperative for Ritabrata to reconcile these internal discrepancies to ensure stability within the TMC.
