Ravneet Singh Bittu has resigned from his position as Union Minister of State for Railways following the completion of his Rajya Sabha term on June 21. The resignation has been formalised, with the President of India accepting it as per a notification from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Bittu held his Rajya Sabha seat representing Rajasthan from August 2024 until June 2026. This change is among the strategic movements by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it prepares for the upcoming Punjab Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for 2027.

Ravneet Bittu is notable as the grandson of Beant Singh, a prominent figure in Punjab politics and a former Chief Minister from the Congress party. His political journey has included significant electoral battles and alliances.

Political Background and Electoral History

Bittu, previously a three-time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from the Congress party, switched to the BJP in 2024 just before the General Elections. His shift to the BJP marked a notable change in his political trajectory, which had included various electoral contests against formidable opponents.

In his first electoral contest under the BJP banner during the General Elections of 2024, Bittu lost to Congress State President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. The margin of defeat was significant, at 20,942 votes, reflecting the ongoing political competition in the region.

Future Political Strategies and Speculations

As the BJP gears up for the upcoming Punjab elections, it has decided to contest without forming an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly criticised the Akali Dal for prioritising its own interests over the needs of the Punjab populace.

The political landscape in Punjab has recently shifted, especially after the Aam Aadmi Party achieved a significant victory in the 2022 Assembly elections, winning 92 of the 117 available seats. In contrast, the BJP was only able to secure two seats.

Given the current circumstances, including the controversies linked to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and internal conflicts within the Congress party, the BJP aims to enhance its performance in the 2027 elections, presenting a challenging yet dynamic electoral environment in Punjab.
