Rahul Gandhi Writes to PM Modi Requests Investigation into Ram Temple Donation Allegations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for an independent investigation into claims of embezzlement associated with donations to the Ram temple in Ayodhya. They expressed concerns that many devotees, who have contributed their money with genuine faith, now feel “betrayed” by the alleged theft. The leaders highlighted the need for transparency in the financial management of the temple.

Gandhi and Kharge emphasised that the Prime Minister’s silence regarding this issue is “unacceptable” and urged him to ensure accountability. They demanded that a thorough inquiry be conducted, and the findings, as well as the Trust’s financial records, be made public. The letter was shared on social media platform X, reinforcing their call for a comprehensive investigation into the financial dealings of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

Details of the Allegations and Arrests Made

The controversy around the alleged misappropriation of donations surfaced in early June 2026. Since that time, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, and two senior officials from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust have reportedly resigned. Following a complaint from the Trust, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on June 25, leading to the arrests.

In their letter, the Congress leaders referred to the formation of the Trust, which was announced by Modi in Parliament as a response to directives from the Supreme Court. They pointed out that the Trust’s members were appointed by the Union government and suggested that these individuals have known affiliations with organisations such as the RSS and VHP, implying a conflict of interest. Additionally, they noted that the Trust’s former general secretary is closely associated with the Prime Minister.

The Congress leaders stressed that the Prime Minister’s inaction in light of these allegations raises significant concerns. They urged him to order a comprehensive investigation into the handling of all donations received by the Trust, including cash and valuable items like gold and silver.

Calls for Transparency and Accountability

The letter culminated in a reiteration of demands for transparency regarding the investigation and the Trust’s finances. Gandhi and Kharge insisted that all findings be disclosed to the public so that devotees can understand how their contributions are used. They underscored the importance of holding accountable anyone deemed responsible for the alleged financial misconduct, regardless of their position or influence.

Finally, the leaders asserted that the credibility of both the government and the Trust hinges on their ability to act transparently and swiftly in this matter, underscoring that the people of India are closely observing how the situation is handled. Gandhi and Kharge concluded their letter with a statement expressing that the resolution of this issue is of utmost importance to the faith and trust of the contributors, urging prompt action from the Prime Minister.
