Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence on August 1, where he raised concerns about what he described as the “unnecessarily increasing” involvement of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Sainik Schools. BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi challenged Gandhi directly during the meeting, questioning the basis for his statements regarding the RSS. Role of Private Organisations in Sainik Schools

Reportedly, 70 Sainik Schools have been allocated to various organisations, including Vidya Bharati and Saraswati Sishu Mandir, under a partnership model. This arrangement is part of the government’s strategy to create a more expansive network of Sainik Schools across the country. The Parliamentary Standing Committee gathered to review and adopt Action Taken Reports concerning the Defence Forces Group (DFG) for the years 2026-27, as well as the review of Sainik Schools, Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), and Rashtriya Military Schools. Furthermore, representatives from the Ministry of Defence provided oral evidence regarding the modernisation and self-reliance of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs).

Additionally, the government had introduced an initiative in December 2022, which aims to establish 100 new Sainik Schools in collaboration with non-governmental organisations, private schools, and state government schools across Union Territories and states. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to expanding military preparatory education.

Gandhi’s Early Departure from the Meeting

Rahul Gandhi concluded his participation in the meeting earlier than scheduled in order to attend a book launch event, according to reports. His early departure did not preclude substantive discussions about the direction and oversight of Sainik Schools, which remain a topic of national interest.
