Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has called for the establishment of an independent, Supreme Court-monitored committee to investigate the alleged police action against student demonstrators. This request was made on July 30, 2026, following reports of excessive force utilised during a protest held on July 20 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Gandhi emphasised the necessity of justice for students who faced brutality during the protest.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Gandhi stated, “Students deserve justice. An independent SC monitored high-powered committee must be constituted to probe brutalities against our students.” Along with this message, he also circulated a video that reportedly depicted the confrontation between police and protesters, showing instances of lathi-charge and aggressive behaviour towards individuals carrying the Indian flag.

Opposition Protests at Parliament

On the same day, members of the Opposition staged a protest at Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex, voicing their concerns regarding the alleged police violence against students. Gathering around 10.30 am, MPs from various parties within the INDIA bloc expressed their outrage by holding placards and chanting slogans demanding accountability from the government for the actions taken against the demonstrators.

The protest was prompted by allegations of both police misconduct during the July 20 demonstration and the mismanagement of funds intended for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Opposition MPs questioned the orders that led to the reported police actions and demanded explanations from the central government regarding these incidents.

This outcry from the Opposition arose just before the Rajya Sabha was set to deliberate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer noted that the Opposition had previously demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and requested a statement from Parliament regarding the police’s alleged actions against students.

Parliamentary Demands for Accountability

During the same discussions, Naseer further called for an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning the alleged police treatment of the students. The absence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from the parliamentary debate was also highlighted, with critics underscoring that the Delhi Police operates under the Home Ministry, thus making Shah’s presence necessary to address the allegations.

As the day unfolded, the Rajya Sabha was anticipated to begin discussions on the aforementioned amendment bill at 2 pm. This legislation, which had been approved by the Lok Sabha the previous day, aims to enhance the legal framework against examination-related malpractices. It proposes stricter penalties for issues such as paper leaks, the creation of a Special Task Force for investigations, and provisions for Special Fast Track Courts to ensure expeditious trials.
