Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has made a pointed critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labelling him as a representation of India’s past. This statement was made during ongoing protests over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), where Gandhi emphasised the importance of the student protesters as embodiments of the country’s future.

Speaking to the media on July 25, Gandhi voiced his concern that the government system was targeting youth who were asserting their rights. He encouraged the protesters to remain steadfast, claiming that not even the full strength of the Indian government could force them to back down. His assertion highlighted the resilience of the youth as a cornerstone for India’s future.

Call for Accountability from the Government

In his address, Gandhi also sought an apology from Prime Minister Modi and reiterated the students’ demand for the removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He condemned the government’s approach, stating that rather than offering constructive suggestions, Modi needed to recognise the severity of the situation affecting students and their rights.

The former Congress President underscored the importance of accountability, insisting that the Prime Minister acknowledge the physical and emotional distress inflicted upon students during the protests. He expressed that the principal figure in charge of the educational system must assume responsibility for the alleged violent incidents against students.

Furthermore, Gandhi mentioned that the government’s claims of receiving positive suggestions were irrelevant to the immediate demands of the protesters who were calling for Pradhan’s resignation. He asserted that the crisis at hand required more than just discussions; it necessitated concrete action.

Protests Led by the Cockroach Janta Party

Alongside Gandhi’s statements, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) remains steadfast in its campaign, refusing to relent until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the party, expressed his relief over social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health after the latter ended his prolonged hunger strike of 26 days. Dipke accentuated that the agitation would continue as long as Pradhan holds his position.

Dipke noted that the party’s demand for accountability regarding examination irregularities remains pivotal. He insisted that any negotiations with the government must take place in a neutral setting, reinforcing their stance that only the resignation of Pradhan would be acceptable.

Earlier, Sonam Wangchuk concluded his hunger strike after securing a written assurance from the Union Government regarding reforms in competitive testing. Despite some criticisms concerning his decision to end the strike, Wangchuk defended his commitment to the issue and highlighted the need for a formal agreement, which led to a delay in ending his protest.

Government Response and Ongoing Issues

Following the nearly two-hour meeting involving Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, the CJP received indications that the government was deliberating on their demand. Reportedly, the government sought until Saturday afternoon to respond to the calls for Pradhan’s resignation, marking a significant point in the ongoing negotiations.

The protests against the NEET issues and the associated calls for accountability illustrate a deepening crisis within the education sector, drawing the attention of various stakeholders in India. The political dynamics surrounding these protests could have widespread implications for future governance and education policy in the country.
