Qatar Repatriates Bodies Of All Indians Killed In Ras Laffan Gas Facility Fire

The CSR Journal Magazine

The bodies of eight Indian nationals who lost their lives in the Ras Laffan industrial accident in Qatar were repatriated to India, as confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Doha. The embassy reported that the repatriation occurred on June 26, following an earlier transfer of four out of the 12 deceased individuals on June 25. This tragic incident marked a significant loss for the Indian community and highlighted the risks associated with industrial operations in the region.

The Indian Embassy expressed its condolences and gratitude in a post shared on the platform X. The post detailed the processes undertaken for bringing back the deceased. The embassy acknowledged the concerted efforts of the Qatari authorities, Indian community organisations, and the government of India that facilitated the expeditious repatriation of the bodies involved in this unfortunate incident.

Incident Overview and Casualties

The repatriation followed a deadly explosion and fire at a gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals and left 66 others injured. According to Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad bin Shreida Al-Kaabi, the incident occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility on the evening of Sunday, June 25, during the commencement of operations. The fatalities included both Indian and Pakistani nationals.

In the aftermath of the explosion, QatarEnergy confirmed that emergency response teams were promptly activated to manage the fire and assess the situation. The rapid response efforts were essential in controlling the fire and providing medical assistance to the injured, who came from several nations, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and others across Africa.

The Indian Embassy in Doha maintained consistent communication with the Qatari authorities to coordinate support for the families of those affected. The embassy has also pledged to offer all necessary assistance to the families of the victims and those who sustained injuries in the incident.

Support for the Injured and Their Families

On June 27, embassy officials, including the Indian Ambassador, visited some of the injured individuals receiving medical treatment at a facility in Alkhor, Qatar. All injured persons had reportedly received necessary medical care, reflecting the collaborative efforts between the Qatari authorities and the employer company involved. The embassy’s commitment to aiding those affected by the incident remains a priority as the situation develops.

In addition to the support facilitated by QatarEnergy, the embassy thanked various organisations and individuals who contributed to the response efforts. The tragedy underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing such incidents and ensuring that support is readily available for those in need.

The repatriation of the deceased has provided some degree of closure for the affected families, who have been grappling with their losses. The community organisations, both in Qatar and India, are expected to play a significant role in providing ongoing support to the bereaved and the injured in the coming weeks.
