A Pune-based gang has reportedly swindled the son of a fallen anti-Naxal soldier out of over Rs 2 crore by promising him a direct government job as a Deputy Collector. The incident has drawn significant attention due to the tragic outcome it produced for the soldier’s family. According to police reports, the victim, Sagar Ganpat Madavi, aged 27 years and a resident of Gadchiroli, was deeply inspired by his father’s legacy, who was martyred in 2013 fighting against Naxal insurgents in Maharashtra.

While preparing for competitive exams in Pune, Sagar allegedly encountered Dnyaneshwar Shivaji Ware, the main accused in this case. Ware claimed he had influential connections within the state secretariat and promised to secure a job for Sagar directly. It is alleged that the accused lured not only Sagar but also his siblings with similar promises of employment, exploiting their aspirations.

To comply with the gang’s demands, Sagar reportedly exhausted all his financial resources, which included the government compensation awarded to his family after his father’s passing. He also sold family jewellery and significant parcels of land. In an unfortunate turn of events, Sagar liquidated his life insurance policy and even sold their ancestral home in pursuit of the promised job.

Impact of the Fraud on the Family

The financial devastation that ensued had severe repercussions for Sagar’s family. After failing to secure the promised government position and realising he had been deceived, Sagar approached local police authorities to report the incident. Subsequently, a case was registered, but by then, the emotional and financial toll had become irreparable.

Tragically, Sagar’s mother, Meenabai Madavi, who had harboured dreams of seeing her children become public servants, was unable to cope with the enormity of their losses, which included their accumulated savings and their home. Under overwhelming mental strain, she reportedly died by suicide in January this year. This heartbreaking event has underscored the devastating impact of such fraudulent schemes on vulnerable families.

Law enforcement authorities are now further investigating the extent of this fraud. They have confirmed the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Dnyaneshwar Ware, with a court remanding him to four days of police custody on April 21. Authorities have also identified additional individuals involved; one of whom presented himself as a senior official from the Mantralaya. Alongside Ware, four other suspects, named Ajay Bhagat, Mukesh Yadav, Sandeep Kumar, and a person identified as Mahajan, are reportedly absconding.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Implications

In light of these developments, Pune police are intensifying their investigation to determine the breadth of the operation and whether other aspiring candidates have suffered similar fates at the hands of this gang. The tragic story of Sagar Madavi’s demise and the loss of his family’s resources has prompted discussions on the need for better safeguards against such fraudulent practices targeting vulnerable individuals.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when approached by individuals claiming to have the ability to secure government jobs in exchange for monetary compensation. Educational and government institutions are being encouraged to raise awareness about similar scams, particularly among youth and families facing precarious financial situations.
