Protests Erupt Outside Pinarayi Vijayan’s Residence Amid ED Probe

The CSR Journal Magazine

Protests occurred outside the residence of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on May 27, resulting in alleged damage to vehicles belonging to Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The unrest began as ED personnel arrived to conduct a search in connection with an ongoing money laundering investigation. Tensions rose between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) cadres and the agency officials, leading to confrontations.

Government’s Response to ED Actions

Keralam Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala stated that the state government had not been informed of the ED’s raid earlier that day. In remarks to the media, Chennithala emphasised that the ED did not seek assistance from the Keralam government regarding its operations at Vijayan’s residence. He urged that all inquiries about the investigation should be directed towards the ED.

Chennithala further claimed there was an understanding between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Keralam. He asserted that his party has been historically opposed to both groups. “Everybody in Keralam knows there was an understanding between the BJP and the CPI(M). What happened to that understanding now? They have to tell the people of Keralam,” he noted, reiterating his party’s position as an opponent of the BJP.

The ED conducted searches at ten locations across Keralam, including Vijayan’s residence, in connection with the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) case. Officials indicated that the raids commenced early Wednesday based on specific information regarding those implicated in the case through financial transactions that have stirred political controversy during Vijayan’s time in office.

Legal Developments and Allegations of Political Targeting

The ED’s actions occurred following a decision by the Keralam High Court on May 26, which declined to dismiss the agency’s investigation into the CMRL case. As these developments unfolded, the CPI(M) voiced concerns regarding the use of central agencies for political purposes. In a statement released on social media, the party referred to the ED’s raid as an illustration of how such agencies are allegedly being used for political vendetta against opposition leaders.

CPI(M) accused the BJP-led Central Government of exploiting institutions such as the ED, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Income Tax Department to intimidate political adversaries and curb dissent. The party’s statement emphasised that those opposing the BJP-led government are facing harassment through these agencies, which it described as a method of silencing opposition.

The growing tensions illustrate the ongoing political battles within Keralam, as opposition parties raise critical concerns about the involvement of central investigative agencies in local politics. The CPI(M) insists that such actions represent a significant threat to democracy and political integrity, calling for accountability and transparency from the ruling government and its allied agencies.
