Police Dismantle ‘Looteri Dulhan’ Gang in Uttar Pradesh, Arrest Four Women

The CSR Journal Magazine

Law enforcement authorities in Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, have successfully dismantled a fraudulent marriage syndicate known as the “looteri dulhan” gang. This operation led to the arrest of four women allegedly involved in duping men under the guise of marriage. A fifth suspect, identified as Jitendra, remains at large.

The action was executed by officers from the Sinduria Police Station, who apprehended the women in the vicinity of Chiutaha Bazaar. Police reports indicate that the team recovered Rs 39,500 in cash, along with silver anklets and a mangalsutra, which are believed to have been acquired through deceit.

Superintendent of Police Shakti Mohan Awasthi provided insights into the operation during a press briefing, outlining that the gang enacted well-orchestrated schemes to arrange sham marriages. Their methods included extorting money and valuables from their victims.

Overview of the Scam

The fraudulent activities came to light following a formal complaint lodged by Ranjeet Chauhan, a resident of Etah. Chauhan accused Jitendra and the four arrested women of orchestrating his marriage to a woman named Anjalika. The suspects misrepresented the bride as unmarried, concealing the fact that she was already married and had a child.

The complaint further detailed that the accused conducted wedding rites at a local temple in the Sinduria area, during which they allegedly extracted nearly Rs 1 lakh and valuable jewellery under the pretense of wedding expenses. Reports suggest that midway through the ceremony, the suspects became aggressive, assaulted the victim, and then fled the scene. Jitendra allegedly escaped with the so-called bride, while the other suspects took flight.

Following the investigation, the police were able to apprehend four women: Sumitra, Lalti, Kajal, and Anjalika. During the interrogation, Lalti was identified as the perceived mastermind behind the entire operation, possessing a prior criminal history.

Role of the Accused and Next Steps

Further investigation revealed that Sumitra, who pretended to be the mother of the bride, allegedly posed as mute and deaf in an effort to appear non-threatening and gain the victims’ trust, thereby enhancing the credibility of the con. This tactic contributed significantly to the gang’s ability to deceive victims.

All four women arrested in connection to this case have been remanded to judicial custody under applicable legal provisions. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to locate and apprehend the fifth suspect, Jitendra, who remains evades capture.

The police have reiterated their commitment to addressing such fraudulent practices and ensuring that victims receive the support they require. Authorities are also urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent similar scams in the future.
