The CSR Journal Magazine

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to Jakarta, India and Indonesia formalised several agreements across sectors, prominently focusing on health and education. The signing took place on Tuesday, highlighting a shared commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation. This visit marks the beginning of Modi’s three-nation tour, which will also include Australia and New Zealand.

Among the notable announcements was the proposal to establish an overseas campus of the esteemed Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in Indonesia. This initiative is expected to serve the needs of youths across the ASEAN region and is part of a broader strategy to deepen educational ties between the two countries.

Additionally, various agreements were concluded covering critical areas such as defence, maritime security, and cooperation in critical minerals. This array of pacts indicates a multifaceted approach to strengthening India-Indonesia relations.

IIM Bangalore Campus to Be Set Up in East Java

The overseas campus of IIM Bangalore is planned to be situated within the Singhasari Special Economic Zone, located in East Java province. This move follows the example set by IIM Ahmedabad, which became the first premier Indian business school to establish an international campus when it opened in Dubai last year.

Prime Minister Modi emphasised the long-term benefits of this educational initiative for the youth of Indonesia and the surrounding region, stating that it will significantly enhance educational opportunities. The establishment of the campus aims to provide world-class business education in line with global standards.

Besides bolstering educational ties, Modi’s discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also included enhancing trade and investment opportunities, reflecting both nations’ intent to forge stronger economic connections.

Health Sector Collaborations Emphasised

In a further commitment to collaboration, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation of India and Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at regulating medical products. This agreement is designed to facilitate knowledge sharing regarding global regulatory practices, improving access to Indian medical products in Indonesia’s healthcare market.

Modi stated that this partnership would significantly enhance the quality of healthcare services in both countries. By fostering cooperation in the health sector, the agreement aims to ensure that the people of Indonesia gain greater access to high-quality and affordable medicines manufactured in India.

The two nations also entered into an Implementation Agreement on Health Workforce Collaboration, which intends to support fellowship programmes for health professionals and enhance the mobility of qualified healthcare workers. Modi described these initiatives as vital steps towards bolstering the capabilities of Indonesia’s healthcare workforce.

Upon his arrival in Jakarta on Monday, Modi received a red-carpet welcome, underscoring the significance of this diplomatic engagement. The agreements signed not only underscore the multifaceted nature of Indo-Indonesian relations but also reflect a shared vision for collaborative growth and development in crucial sectors.
