PM Modi UAE Visit Sees Major Defence, Energy Deals; USD 5 Billion Investment Announced

India and the United Arab Emirates on Friday elevated their strategic partnership with a series of agreements across defence, energy, infrastructure and banking sectors during PM Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi as part of his five-nation diplomatic tour.

PM Modi held delegation-level talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with both leaders reviewing bilateral ties and discussing ways to deepen cooperation in key sectors including security, trade, energy and infrastructure.

One of the key outcomes of the visit was the signing of an Agreement on Framework for the Strategic Defence Partnership, aimed at further strengthening strategic and security cooperation between the two countries. The agreement is expected to boost collaboration in defence manufacturing, military exchanges and maritime security.

India and the UAE also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Petroleum Reserves along with an agreement on supplies of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), reflecting growing cooperation in the energy sector. The agreements are expected to enhance India’s energy security while expanding long-term energy partnerships with the Gulf nation.

Infrastructure And Maritime Push

In the maritime sector, both countries signed an MoU for setting up a Ship Repair Cluster at Vadinar, a move expected to strengthen India’s maritime infrastructure and logistics capabilities.

A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of investments worth USD 5 billion in Indian infrastructure projects as well as investments in RBL Bank and Samman Capital. The investment announcement signals growing UAE confidence in India’s financial and infrastructure sectors amid expanding economic ties between the two countries.

PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour upon his arrival in Abu Dhabi. The visit marks the first leg of his five-nation tour from May 15 to 20, covering the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.

Europe Tour To Focus On Technology And Green Growth

Following the UAE visit, PM Modi will travel to Netherlands from May 15 to 17, where he is scheduled to hold talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

The discussions in the Netherlands are expected to focus on semiconductors, green hydrogen, defence cooperation, innovation and water management.

PM Modi will then visit Sweden on May 17-18 for bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The leaders are also expected to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Discussions during the Sweden leg are expected to centre around artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, resilient supply chains and green transition initiatives.

India-Nordic Summit In Oslo

In the final leg of the northern Europe visit, PM Modi will travel to Norway to participate in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19. He is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The summit will also witness participation from leaders of Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, with discussions expected around sustainable growth, clean energy, innovation and regional cooperation.
