Leaders from the INDIA Bloc convened a floor strategy meeting at the Parliament House during the ongoing Monsoon Session. This meeting followed a prior session of the Lok Sabha Business Advisory Committee, where significant concerns were raised by the Opposition regarding various pressing issues. Among these was a demand for a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the alleged use of pellet guns against students at Jantar Mantar on July 20.

Opposition’s Concerns on Government Accountability

The Samajwadi Party, a member of the opposition alliance, called for a parliamentary discussion regarding the purported theft of donations meant for the Ram Mandir. Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav reiterated the call for dialogue on this issue during the meeting, underlining its importance. “We previously demanded a discussion in the last Lok Sabha BAC meeting and have raised it again today,” he stated. The call for accountability reflects the ongoing tension between the ruling government and opposition parties.

Rajeev Rai, another MP from the Samajwadi Party, remarked on the challenges faced while trying to raise these issues during the committee meetings. He expressed his concerns that the government has not been responsive to their demands. “We raise demands in the BAC every time, and we’re also moving non-adjournment motions daily. But the government is not willing to listen. The issues that are essential for our country are not being discussed,” he said, highlighting the sense of frustration among opposition members.

Rai also noted that the Home Minister’s absence from discussions regarding the July 20 incidents was particularly troubling. He emphasised that while Shah is present in the Parliament daily, he has yet to enter the House since the alleged use of force against the students. This has led to allegations that the government is avoiding accountability.

Political Tensions Surrounding Recent Protests

The opposition has intensified its criticism of Amit Shah concerning the actions taken by the Delhi Police during the protests on July 20. Allegations include the lathi-charge and the reported use of pellet guns against demonstrators, further exacerbating existing tensions. This environment has led to a wider discontent among opposition members, who feel that significant issues are being neglected in Parliament.

Adding to the political controversy, Independent MP Pappu Yadav attracted attention last week when he impersonated a priest to gather donations while making a statement against the government regarding the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft. This act sparked further debate within the political arena, demonstrating the lengths to which some politicians may go to draw attention to issues they believe are important. The incident reflects the friction and competitive nature of contemporary Indian politics.
