The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on April 14, during which he will inaugurate the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor in Dehradun. This visit marks a significant event in the Prime Minister’s schedule that aims to boost infrastructure and connectivity in the region.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the PM will commence his engagements at approximately 11:15 am in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where he will review the Wildlife Corridor that forms part of the elevated section of the Economic Corridor. This step highlights the government’s commitment to balancing development with ecological preservation.

Following the review, Modi will pay homage at the Jai Maa Daat Kali Temple in the vicinity of Dehradun before officially opening the Economic Corridor around 12:30 pm. The event is anticipated to draw substantial public attention, given the significance of the infrastructure project. The corridor is expected to greatly enhance transport facilities in the area.

Details of the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor

The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor is a 213 km-long six-lane, access-controlled highway developed at an expenditure exceeding Rs 12,000 crore. The construction aims to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours to approximately two and a half hours, thereby facilitating quicker transportation.

This project traverses through the capital city of Delhi, and the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It is designed to comprise ten interchanges, three Railway Over Bridges, four major bridges, and twelve wayside amenities. Together, these features contribute to creating a seamless and high-speed roadway experience for commuters.

The corridor is further enhanced by an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), ensuring a safer travel experience. This technological integration aims to alleviate traffic congestion and manage vehicular flow efficiently on this critical route.

Environmental Considerations of the Project

Notable features include a 12 km-long wildlife elevated corridor, recognised as one of the longest in Asia, aimed at preserving the movement of wildlife across the area. Additionally, the corridor will incorporate eight animal passes, along with two 200-metre-long elephant underpasses, and a specially designated 370-metre-long tunnel located near the Daat Kali Temple.

According to the PMO, the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering regional economic development. By enhancing connectivity between key tourism destinations and economic centres, the corridor aims to create new opportunities for trade and development across this strategically important region.
