Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled significant welfare initiatives on June 18, in Hooghly, West Bengal. He distributed the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, aimed at benefiting farmers across the region. The event was conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, with notable support from the West Bengal government.
In this instalment, the government allocated more than Rs 907.21 crore, reaching out to over 45.35 lakh beneficiaries in West Bengal alone. This brings the total funds disbursed under the PM-KISAN scheme in the state to over Rs 15,055 crore since its inception in 2019. Furthermore, the nationwide disbursement included direct transfers of over Rs 18,880 crore to more than 9.44 crore farmers across India.
Introduction of Crop Insurance Scheme
During the event, Prime Minister Modi also launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) specifically for West Bengal. This move aims to extend the advantages of the largest crop insurance initiative globally to the state’s farmers. The programme intends to cover around 1.10 crore farmers during the 2026-27 period, safeguarding approximately 30 lakh hectares of agricultural land with an insured asset value of Rs 28,140 crore.
To alleviate the financial load on farmers, both the central and state governments will contribute approximately Rs 777 crore in premium subsidies. This initiative is expected to significantly aid farmers by lessening their premium burden and enabling them to secure their agricultural investments against unforeseen events.
On the occasion, PM Modi expressed optimism about the future of West Bengal, highlighting a renewed positive atmosphere in the state. He remarked that this initiative is a significant step towards fulfilling the aspirations of Bengalis for a more prosperous future. He also announced various infrastructure projects that would further enhance the development of the region.

He laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure developments, including a 300-bed New Divisional Railway Hospital in Howrah and a road overbridge connecting Haur and Radhamohanpur in Purba Medinipur district. These projects are expected to improve transportation and healthcare facilities in the region.
