The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto recently engaged in extensive discussions in Jakarta, focusing on the supply of BrahMos and Astra missiles to Indonesia. The meetings on July 6, 2026, marked a significant step in enhancing defence cooperation between the two nations. Reports indicate that Indonesia has made the decision to import the Astra air-to-air missiles following their successful deployment during Operation Sindoor.

The latest missile deal comes after India previously signed similar agreements with Vietnam and the Philippines, reflecting its commitment to strengthening defence ties in the Asia-Pacific region. However, details regarding the quantity of missiles to be supplied to Indonesia remain undisclosed.

Both countries are prioritising improved maritime security collaboration alongside advancements in defence capabilities. This push aligns with India’s broader strategy of securing its interests in South-East Asia.

Agreements on Critical Minerals and Technological Cooperation

During their discussions, Modi and Prabowo also addressed the importance of critical minerals in strengthening supply chains. Modi announced India’s intention to invest in the production of steel, nickel, and rare earth permanent magnets in Indonesia, highlighting the significance of resilient supply chains in contemporary technology.

“An important agreement was reached to further strengthen supply chains in critical minerals and steel,” Modi stated, emphasising the collaborative effort to develop local industries. The partnership is expected to facilitate manufacturing advancements and improve resource availability between the two countries.

Moreover, both leaders agreed to work together on the Sabang port development, a strategically important site near the Strait of Malacca, which is situated around 100 miles from India’s Great Nicobar port project. This venture aims to bolster maritime trade and regional connectivity.

Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Global Collaboration

The discussions also resulted in several other agreements covering areas such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and education. Modi mentioned that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2018, was evolving to promote cooperation across various sectors, including technology and culture.

As part of the educational initiatives, the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore is set to establish a branch in Indonesia. This move is intended to enhance academic exchange and provide advanced management education in the region.

In the realm of bilateral trade, Modi touched upon integrating India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Indonesia’s payment systems. This integration is expected to simplify business transactions and travel between the two nations, demonstrating a commitment to improving ease of doing business.

Alongside the defence and economic discussions, the leaders also addressed global challenges, particularly the situation in West Asia. Modi expressed his belief in the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to tackle international issues, underscoring India’s support for the Two-State Solution in Palestine.

The talks in Jakarta signify a concerted effort to advance India-Indonesia relations across various dimensions, with multiple agreements established to enhance defence, trade, education, and collaborative initiatives on shared global concerns.
