“People Support Didi”: TMC Candidate Kunal Ghosh Confident about Victory in Bengal Polls

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kunal Ghosh, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate for the Beleghata Assembly Constituency, expressed optimism regarding his party’s performance ahead of the second phase of polling in West Bengal. He noted a significant turnout among women and senior citizens, indicating a positive sign for the TMC’s voter base. Ghosh’s comments came on April 29, as polling continued across the state, highlighting the critical role of these demographic groups in shaping electoral outcomes.

Concerns Over Election Commission Management

In his statement, Ghosh raised concerns about the management of the polling process by the Election Commission, alleging that inefficiencies had created delays and long queues at polling stations. He connected these issues to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, which he claimed had contributed to the slow progress of voting. Ghosh stated, “This should not happen,” reflecting his frustration with the operational execution of the polling process, which, in his view, impacted voter experience.

Despite these challenges, Ghosh maintained that public support for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, often referred to as ‘Didi’, remains strong. He expressed belief that the TMC’s historical connection with the electorate would prevail, further emphasising the importance of voter mobilisation among women and the elderly. Ghosh’s remarks underscore the party’s focus on grassroots engagement amid logistical hurdles.

As the second phase of polling progresses, voter turnout statistics reveal a robust engagement. By 3:30 pm on the day of polling, West Bengal reported a turnout of 78.68 per cent, with Purba Bardhaman district leading at 83.11 per cent, followed closely by Hooghly at 80.77 per cent. These figures suggest a competitive electoral environment, indicative of the TMC’s sustained influence in traditional strongholds.

Political Contest in West Bengal

Ghosh is contesting against several opponents, including BJP’s Partha Chaudhury, CPI(M) candidate Paramita Roy, and Congress’s Shahina Javed. The competition in Beleghata is emblematic of the broader political landscape in West Bengal, where the TMC faces a formidable challenge from the BJP leading up to the 2026 elections. The ongoing poll phases are crucial as they reflect voter sentiments and party dynamics.

Earlier on the same day, significant figures within the TMC, including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and MP Abhishek Banerjee, engaged actively in the electoral process. Adhikari conducted inspections at polling booths in the Bhabanipur constituency, while Banerjee exercised his right to vote at the Mitra Institute polling station, demonstrating the party’s commitment to monitoring voter turnout and engagement.

The second phase of polling is viewed by many as a critical assessment of the TMC’s position within the electorate, particularly in south Bengal and Kolkata, areas traditionally associated with the party’s support. As the voting unfolds, the results will provide insight into the electorate’s mood and set the tone for future political strategies as the TMC navigates the formidable challenge posed by the BJP in West Bengal.
