Congress leader Pawan Khera has filed a petition with the Supreme Court, challenging an order from the Gauhati High Court that denied his anticipatory bail request. The legal troubles began when Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the spouse of Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Kumar Sarma, lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Khera. The FIR was based on allegations that Khera made during a press conference, where he claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possesses multiple foreign passports and undisclosed assets situated abroad.

Despite earlier legal manoeuvres, Khera’s attempts to secure bail have faced significant challenges. His initial plea for transit anticipatory bail was granted by the Telangana High Court, allowing him to approach any jurisdictional court in Assam. However, this relief was later contested by the Assam Police in the Supreme Court.

On the request of the Assam Police, the Supreme Court intervened and put a stay on the transit anticipatory bail granted by the Telangana High Court.
