Pakistani Air Strikes Kill 36 Civilians and Injure 163 in Afghanistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan has reported significant civilian casualties following alleged cross-border military operations conducted by Pakistan in several eastern provinces. On June 29, the deputy spokesperson, Hamdullah Fitrat, revealed that the air strikes resulted in the deaths of 36 civilians, including women and children, while 163 others sustained injuries. The attacks also destroyed three residential homes, prompting deep concerns within the affected communities.

Fitrat provided details of specific incidents, noting that in Mandokhail Village of Paktia Province, a civilian residence was struck by Pakistani fighter jets on the night preceding the report. The initial attack resulted in the deaths of one elderly man and a child, with additional family members injured during the strike. He further alleged that a subsequent bombing occurred when rescuers arrived at the scene, which reportedly killed 28 villagers and injured 158 others.

Another deadly strike was said to have taken place in Walust Village in Paktika Province, where six individuals, primarily women and children, were reportedly killed when a resident’s home was targeted. In Barolo Village, located in Kunar Province, an air strike was also reported; however, there were no injuries despite significant property damage as a civilian dwelling was destroyed.

Pakistan Claims Justification for Military Action

In parallel to these claims from the Taliban government, a Pakistani media outlet has reported that Islamabad is working to justify the recent military actions. Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, stated that the country’s security forces executed a coordinated ground operation combined with air strikes in a frontier area. He described this operation as a retaliatory response to a series of terrorist incidents within Pakistan, specifically citing attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and a paramilitary camp in Karachi.

The escalation of regional tensions had intensified following a violent assault on the Sindh Rangers provincial headquarters in Karachi. During this incident, which involved armed militants, both Pakistani paramilitary personnel and attackers lost their lives. An affiliate of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, is reportedly responsible for the incident, raising further concerns about security in the region.

Despite these domestic threats, Pakistan has focused its military efforts externally, targeting suspected militant locations in Afghanistan. This unilateral military move is expected to exacerbate the ongoing strife between Islamabad and Kabul, particularly following a recent phase of relative stability that had lasted for approximately one month.

Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic Efforts

This military escalation by Pakistan comes less than three weeks after its forces launched strikes against what they described as militant hiding spots within Afghan territory. The reactivation of military hostilities has disrupted a fragile peace period and poses challenges to global peace initiatives aimed at resolving the longstanding conflict.

The recent spate of border skirmishes has taken a severe toll on civilian populations, with hundreds reportedly losing their lives since February. Conditions deteriorated after Afghanistan conducted retaliatory strikes against unprovoked attacks from Pakistan. Despite multiple attempts at diplomatic negotiations, a sustainable ceasefire has remained elusive due to ongoing conflict.

Efforts by nations such as China to mediate discussions and facilitate a peaceful resolution have thus far failed, particularly following Pakistan’s latest military actions, which undermined previous agreements between Islamabad and Kabul. This developing situation remains a focus of international concern as diplomatic efforts are further threatened by renewed conflict.
