The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has commenced a four-day official visit to China, starting on May 23 and concluding on May 26. This trip marks an important step for both nations as they aim to enhance economic ties and strategic partnerships. Sharif’s delegation includes key figures such as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister of Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister of IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.

During his time in China, Sharif is scheduled to engage in discussions with several high-ranking officials and participate in a series of events that will focus on the ongoing collaboration under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He is set to meet with Party Secretary of Zhejiang Province, Wang Hao, and visit the headquarters of Alibaba, where investment talks will be held.

Key Engagements and Meetings

Sharif’s agenda includes attending a business forum that will promote cooperation under CPEC Phase 2, as well as witnessing the signing of various agreements and memorandums of understanding. Important discussions will take place with CEOs of major Chinese companies, fostering opportunities for further investment and collaboration.

Following the events in Hangzhou, Sharif will travel to Beijing for high-level meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. One significant aspect of this visit is its alignment with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, which will bring additional cooperation and engagement opportunities.

The Pakistani Foreign Office has expressed that this visit will reinforce the steadfast nature of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership. The discussions will also seek to extend collaboration across various sectors including trade, investment, agriculture, IT, science, and cultural exchanges.

Regional Issues and Strategic Coordination

A Foreign Office statement highlighted that the ongoing regional tensions, particularly the US-Iran conflict, are likely to be addressed during Sharif’s visit. The spokesperson for the Foreign Office, Tahir Andrabi, noted that Pakistan and China have consistently maintained coordination over Middle Eastern issues, underlining their commitment to peace efforts in the region. His remarks indicated a structured dialogue that aligns both nations’ interests.

Andrabi also recalled the earlier visit of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to China, which resulted in the establishment of a five-point principle as part of a joint statement. This foundational agreement is expected to act as a guiding framework for discussions during the Prime Minister’s current visit.

Overall, this official visit is positioned as a pivotal moment for reinforcing the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and China. The anticipated outcomes will not only seek to deepen trust and strengthen strategic coordination, but also enhance practical cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
