Pakistan Pledges Continued Support for US-Iran Peace Process

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has pledged the country’s commitment to facilitating lasting peace between the United States and Iran. This vow was communicated to his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, in an official statement released on Wednesday. The dialogue took place as both nations examined their bilateral relations amid recent shifts in the diplomatic landscape involving the US and Iran.

The commitment was made during Momeni’s one-day visit as part of a delegation led by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. On the preceding week, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at fostering peace in West Asia, an event underscoring the necessity for proactive diplomatic engagement in the region.

International Community’s Positive Recognition

Separately, on Wednesday, Pakistan expressed its appreciation for what it termed as positive feedback from the international community regarding its role in promoting dialogue and de-escalation efforts between the US and Iran. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi indicated that this acknowledgment highlights the global trust placed in Pakistan’s capability to foster peace and security.

The discussions between the US and Iran are reportedly progressing, having included technical-level consultations held earlier this week in Switzerland, with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar. Pakistan’s involvement as a “guarantor” in the memorandum signifies its commitment to mediating for stability in the region. Following these talks, both nations agreed upon a framework for reaching a final peace deal within 60 days.

Naqvi congratulated Momeni on the successful signing of the joint communiqué in Switzerland, crediting the progress to the genuine efforts of the Iranian government and Momeni’s dedication. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to pursuing peace and stability across the globe, especially in the Middle East, hoping that the joint communiqué would yield substantial positive outcomes for regional dynamics.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

During their meeting, Naqvi and Momeni discussed the enhancement of collaboration in several areas, including security, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and immigration policies. Their recently intensified interactions reflect an ongoing commitment to high-level diplomatic engagement between the two nations, with Momeni anticipating a more detailed visit to Pakistan to further advance cooperation between the respective interior ministries.

Momeni expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to the Iranian delegation by Pakistan during their visit. As a symbolic gesture of security cooperation, Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder jets escorted the Iranian president’s aircraft upon entering Pakistani airspace on Tuesday, signalling a cooperative military posture.

At the weekly media briefing, spokesperson Andrabi elaborated on the initiatives agreed upon by the US and Iran, which include establishing communication channels to mitigate potential misunderstandings and ensure the safe navigation of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. A deconfliction mechanism is also reportedly being developed, with involvement from Lebanon. Technical teams from Pakistan and Qatar are set to collaborate further with their US and Iranian counterparts to support the implementation of the agreement.

Pakistan’s recent diplomatic engagements with Iran and its role within the US-Iran discussions showcase its continuous efforts to contribute to regional peace and stability, reinforcing Pakistan’s standing as a pivotal player in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
