Owaisi Questions Child Limit in SIR Electoral Roll Process

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative for updating electoral rolls, particularly its restriction that allows details of only up to five children to be entered on the enumeration form. He contends that there is no existing legislation in India that prevents citizens with more than five children from participating in elections.

Speaking at a public gathering in Hyderabad, Owaisi urged attendees to provide accurate information during the electoral process. He made comparisons to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remarking that Modi actually hails from a family with more than five children, questioning the rationale behind the five-child limitation.

Owaisi emphasised that this limitation could potentially hinder the voting rights of eligible citizens, asserting that the constitution guarantees the right to vote for every citizen, regardless of family size. His comments reflect growing frustrations among various community members regarding the SIR process.

Electoral Roll Update Timeline in Telangana

The SIR for updating electoral rolls in Telangana is scheduled to commence on June 15, followed by door-to-door verification conducted by Booth Level Officers from June 25 to July 24. The publication of a draft electoral roll is set for July 31, enabling stakeholders to submit claims and objections until August 30. The final electoral roll is expected to be released on October 1.

Owaisi has been vocal about his criticism of the SIR process, stating that it could lead to a “permanent class of excluded Indians” if not managed properly. He has articulated his concerns about the implications of such exclusions for local communities and broader democratic participation.

In an effort to support the electoral rights of citizens, Owaisi instructed party leaders to provide the necessary assistance throughout the SIR process. His goal is to ensure that no eligible voter is inconvenienced or left off the electoral rolls due to procedural complexities or a lack of awareness about the process.

Party Leaders and Support for Voter Inclusivity

Owaisi recently convened a meeting with party legislators to assess the progress and implementation of the SIR initiative. During this meeting, he reiterated the importance of making all possible efforts to include eligible voters in the electoral rolls, highlighting the need to prevent any removals that could occur from procedural errors.

The party’s approach focuses on direct engagement with the electorate to educate them about the SIR process and the importance of their participation. Owaisi’s leadership aims to address any barriers voters may face, ensuring that their voices are heard within the democratic system.

In conclusion, the upcoming electoral roll updates have emerged as a significant topic of discussion in Telangana, with Owaisi’s critiques spotlighting the potential consequences of the SIR process. As the timeline for the electoral revisions approaches, the emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility for all eligible voters remains a critical aspect of political discourse in the region.
